True, especially since it can ruin the fuel pump to run it empty. They are protecting their warranty from Dipshits who run out of gas and ruin their fuel pump and want it replaced for free.

Quoting the owners manual

Quote:
The gauge indicates the approximate quantity of fuel remaining in the tank when the ignition switch is on.
Nearly full--Needle at F
Nearly empty--Needle at E
It is a good idea to keep the tank over 1/4 full.
So Toyota does protect itself from people getting irrate about the fuel gauge being slightly off by saying nearly Either way, all cars are designed like this nowadays...we just have to get used to it.

I fill up my tank at 1/4-1/3 full. It's cheaper that way.....LOL Actually, it's very important in the wintertime to keep it as full as possible, to prevent condensation in the tank.

I top my tanks all the time too. However, I will on occasion run out nearly all the gas (Wait for the light) then fill it up. I do this to "rotate" any older gasoline that is building up in the tank. Mostly I am on that "Price-Hunt" to find the best price before it goes up during the week. With Mrs Dood's car I only have to top it's tank every two weeks. Mine is topped every other damn stinkin' day....<sigh>

To me anyways...(don't know if there is any real truth to it) It feels like the vehicle runs better on a full tank. It is definetly a bit heavier that is for sure so I am sure it feels smoother because of the extra weight. No different then putting a load in a Pick-up truck to smooth out it's ride. I just like the feeling to have fully topped gas tanks.

Also a couple of times per winter I wil put in some "good" Dry Gas in my tanks to make sure I am not building up too much water. As a rule of thumb I never top my tanks while a Tanker is filling the station up. That will force all of their water in their tanks to the top and then you pump it into your tank.

Pretty sure it syphons on the bottom, not the top, like a well pump. So using your situation, you would want to get gas while the tanker was there.

BTW, which Lansing are you located? MI, or IL?

There may be some truth to this, but I doubt it has to do with water. More likely it has to do with the turbulent flow of gas into the tank stirring up solid contaminents in the bottom of the tank. Just a guess....
