USA 5.7l Good To Go Or Wait

Great Tundra board .

I have done several searches in an effort to understand everything about this truck. Looks like there are some engine issues with the 5.7L. Any thoughts on if this is fixed or not. My truck is due at the dealer in about three weeks and i'm starting to get cold feet. Also anybody installed brake controllers and if so where? I really don't want it in the legroom area. I don't want o hit it getting in and out of the truck . I will be towing about 5,000 lbs not sure if i need it or not. Truck is a 5.7L Crewmax limited 4x4 Thanks in advance!!!

I'm not yet a Tundra owner, but from my research it appears that the cam issues were a very small number of the first batch of trucks. The verdict is still out on the 6 speed tranny....

Sorry to hijack this thread, but it is really a response which drives a question regarding your towing.

The Payload on the 07 Crewmax Tundra SR5 is 1360 lbs.
Subtract weight for 2 adults -400 lbs.
Subtract weight for 2 kids -200 lbs.
Subtract weight for coolers and food -100 lbs.
Subtract weight for camping gear -260 lbs.
That means 1360-400-200-100-260 = 400 lbs is left for other payload.

Now if you are pulling a 5000 lb trailer the tongue or hitch weight should be 10% - 15% of the trailer weight. That's 500 to 750 lbs added to the payload, which puts it in to an overload position.

I am sure the Tundra can handle it, and there may or may not even be a rear suspension issue where the back of the truck drops too much. But if you are in an accident the insurance company could get ugly.

Thoughts?

How is everyone handling towing with this?

Australia No Worries

My controller is mounted in the same spot as Lance and works fine, doesn't get in the way. You have no worries buying a Toyota they will look after you, the customer service is second to none I can't say that about the Titan that I owned previously.

I think there is more to this than just adding brakes. Any trailor over 1000# should have brakes.

thanks for the reply's . Thanks LanceM for the pic. I am using a controller now with a Honda Ridgeline and works good but seems like alot to pull with not much truck. The main reason for the Full size truck is safety meaning it should pull the trailer safer because it is a larger vehicle with larger capacity. I wanted one of these trucks when they came out but couldn't get much from MSRP now you can get some money and some sweet financing .Looks like i will put my controller in the same place as Lance. Anybody try to mount the controller inside the storage space in between the front seats?

John

I know this will seem weird but alot of the controlers have to be mounted in the direction of travel and some what horizontal so it can adjust to the travel of up and down hills.

Payload Capacity = GVWR - Curb Weight

Your Payload Weight should not exceed the Payload Capacity of the truck. Don't forget that the Payload Capacity lowers as you add any optional equipment – the more weight you add to the truck the lower the payload capacity.
Another way of assessing whether a truck can carry the load you need, is to look at the total weight of the pickup with everyone and everything in it - this is called the Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW).
Danger: If GVW is greater than GVWR, then your truck is Overloaded!!
Overloading can seriously damage your truck and is dangerous for the driver and passengers.
A warning about Frame Strength
A truck is only as strong as its frame. Yet, often owners overload trucks or “beef” them up with oversize springs, tires and wheels. These kinds of modifications don't effectively change the Payload Capacity of pickup trucks because the other components of the truck, especially the frame, are rated to carry a specific maximum weight.

oh yeah, as for your original question regarding engine problems, I think all those issues were resolved. The faults were caused by a bad casting of the camshaft, and only 11 have been reported. I think it's safe to say that you'll be fine. My build date on my Tundra is 4/07 and I only have a radio problem.

brake controler

I am waiting for delivery of my Tundra DC 5.7 . I plan on using the same controler that was in my F150. It is from draw tite and a control box mounts up and under the dash. It has a hand held controler that kind of looks like a CB radio mic. You can even detach it from the control box when you do not need it. i found it to be a great solution. Now if my Tundra would just show up!

Interesting!? I was thinking of getting a P3, but I want somthing that can be more hidden since I hate having to have the controllers stick out, usually by my chins/knee. Do you hav pics of the Drawtite controller?

Here is a pic of it. Waiting to go into my new toy when it shows up. The control box is about 4" x 4" and tucks under the dash. The hand held control has a squeeze lever for manual brake application. It also houses the settings for delay and brake force. I have not had a single problem with it so far.

I got my new crewmax 5.7L about 5 weeks ago and have never looked back. I had hird of some engine and trans problems before I made the plunge. As I lirk on these forums every day the problems seem to have gone away. I do not here of any probs. lately. What I will tell you is get yourself one you will be amazed at the truck. I have owned several and I mean several big 3 new trucks and I have had some that got near 18-19 mpg. None of them got 19-20mpg with as much power as the Tundra has. I guess tou can tell I am in heaven with my first Toyota truck. The way it looks it will be a cold day in he!! before I go back to one of the other.

It's here!

It's here! Hope the dealer will have it ready for tomorrow after work. If not I might have to wait until Monday! God I hope it's not Monday! My Truck is a DC, 5.7 with the TRD package. I am also having the backup camera installed. Can't wait, I'm such a kid at heart.
