Why 5-lug?

I'm coming over from the Camry section here, so if this has been talked about before then sorry (I did search a little with no results).

I've seen quite a few of the new Tundra's around, but I always wondered why they went back to a 5 lug setup? Is there any positive aspect from it?

Who knows? Wheel styling? Chevy went from six up to 1970 to five in 1971 and back to six in 1999. Dodge and Ford have always used five.

Nothing positive really, just a desicion they made.

They did however change the stud size to 14mm instead of the old 12mm ones so ridgidity hasn't been sacrificed.
The Landcruiser made this same change back in 1998, 4runner in 03 and Tacoma in 05, so the Tundra is 9 years behind if you think about it.

I'm not sure either, but I liked the 6 on the Tacoma (it's a little bass ackwards if you ask me). As long as they hold what they are supposed to, though, I could care less. I'm sure if there's an HD version coming out, it'll be a 6-lugger.

the reason for the new tundra to use the 5 lug pattern is because its the same as the land cruisers as someone stated

they use larger studs so its stronger and uses 22mm lug nuts not the 21mm like every toyotas are

another reason is because... whats stronger.. a wheel with 5 holes or 6? larger lug nuts and more torque to the wheels .. keep your wheels bolted and studs from breaking due to your crazy off roading

Thanks for answering my question. I always thought that those pickups with 8-lugs seem a bit much for a consumer pick-up.

HD models should have eight, like everyone else. Ford had a crazy SEVEN lug pattern for the now-discontinued light-duty F-250 and may still use it on the "payload package" F-150 which replaced it. The manufacturers really dont want owners to use aftermarket wheels, with liability, tire pressure monitors, etc.

IMO its a profit issue. If Toyota installs 4 less lug nuts per Tundra
and sells 200K+ Tundras do the math. Also being a true half ton why not 5 lugs?

I'm not finding a lot of wheel options in this lug size. I've tried Les Schwab and Discount Tire. Any, other suggestions?

boss motorsports has 1 wheel available, and land cruiser wheels too. The boss wheel is a 22" and has a half decent lip on it, and $650 plus shipping for the rims. Not much of a choice of wheels, sucks
