Can't decide which one to get?... is the gas mileages that similar?... any opinions would be appreciated... I probably wont do that much towing... but... the power in the 5.7 is real enticing.... also I noticed that the hood did not have the sound proofing pad like my 4 runner, is that something toyota is leaving out, or maybe something that will be added in the 08 models?... thanks

The torque output from the 5.7L, combined with the gearing from the 6-speed transmission proved to yield similar or better fuel mileage than the 4.7L engine. Of course it depends heavily on how you drive, and other things like tire pressure, extra weight, and usage of a/c and other devices. So if you're a leadfoot, the 5.7 probably doesn't help fuel economy

My last two Toyotas didnt have the soundproofing/heat guard, an 04 Tacoma and a 06 Tundra. Personally I'd get the 5.7, if you ever want to sell it, it would definately help its value.
5.7 is the S! Good thing about the 4.7 is its tried and proven, been in the Toyota family for a couple of years now. 5.7 is still relatively new, even in it's 3rd derived generation. The 6-speed with the 5.7 are excellent. There has been some complaining about clunking, but I have only experienced a minor clunk that has gone away now.
5.7 is the way to go, but as Dana mentioned, if you aren't going to tow, a 4.7 may be a better choice.

After previously owning a 5.3 in a Silverado, the 4.7 is just adequate in the prev gen Tundra, I can imagine its the same with the new body style, which is heavier.

Haha, it's just a small driveline clunk, like I experienced on my Tacoma. Now that the truck is broken in and has some miles on it (4800), the clunk has gone away. It's something to look for when taking a test drive, but it's nothing to worry about. There was one unverified claim that the clunk lead to a transmission failure, but like I said, unverified. I wouldn't worry about it; I'm not.
