What's the general advise regards oil type for the 5.7L Tundra engine. I get free oil and filter changes from the dealer with the normal recommended 5-20W Toyota oil. But...is it worth paying extra for full synthetic oil such as Mobil 1? I would still plan to change oil at the recommended intervals (5000 miles).
If you have free oil changes and plan to change it every 5k, then you should be fine. Note that your dealership may not use 5W20, though. They have been pretty sneaky and using bulk 5W30. I personally use synthetic, though.

When you can go to syntetic for less than the cost of 1 tank of gas, why not do it. I find vehicles start easier in the winter with synthetic so that alone is worth it to me.

i dont know how other dealerships are doing it.. but every toyota that comes to our dealership that uses 0-20 .. truck or car.. we put toyotas 0-20 synthetic oil ( even if they have the prepaid oil change coupons)
from what i heard.. 0-20 only comes in synthetic since to get that weight it has to be man made..
since we are a toyota dealership. we have to use toyota oil in toyota cars ... as far as what my parts manager told me.. we cant get 5-20 non synthetic oil since toyota doesnt make that... so we have to buy and use 0-20 synthetic

I just got my first oil change in my Tundra 5.7L. They used NAPA 5-20W. I guess this is OK...however, I think I'll switch to Mobil 1 0-20W next time. I don't know who makes the Toyota brand of oil, but I'd assume it's a high quality manufactuer since they've had engine problems relating to oil before.

Its definitly worth it...if you want to maximize your oil change interval getting a oil analysis is the only way to go, after warrenty of course.
Toyota brand oil is made by ExxonMobil, if that makes you feel better. In Austin, TX there is no advantage to an oil that pours at -60F vs one that pours at -40F.
I will start doing used oil analysis just before the warranty expires, in case they find something like traces of coolant in the oil that is not yet an obvious leak.

Toyota does have 5-20W non-synthetic oil. I just bought a quart from the dealer. It comes in a black container, part number, 00279-1QT20.
really.. well my parts manager doesnt know jack than.. guess ill have to let him know
I guess the parts manager here is not up to speed either. He said Toyota does not make 0-20W synthetic. When I pointed out in the owners manual that 0-20W is the preferred oil for the 5.7L engine, he stated that was new to him and it only applied to Alaska (if was new to him why did he make the "Alaska" statement?) Hmmmm....guess we have to rely on own common sense sometimes.
Slightly off-topic, but why does it seem that parts people at Toyota dealerships seem not to have a clue? I go to the local Chevy, Ford, Dodge and BMW dealerships and the parts department actually knows something about cars. Does Toyota just train people off the street in how to work the computer and send these folks out to the dealers as "certified" or some horse manure like that. How do the mechanics put up with it?
i rather get part numbers of what i want before i got to the dealership ( since i own two hondas and buy oem honda parts ) i tell them the part number instead of telling them what car i have and what i want
since most parts guys will say this and that .. also they like to diagnosis your car without even looking / or verifying that you car really does have that problem
most parts guys get most there info from techs.. and once they hear a customer have a problem that was similar to what the tech told them.. they think they can fix your car
Not at 5K intervals, its just a waste. Virg is in Austin, TX, not Canada. Winter starting is simply a non-issue. No syn advantage there.
At the dealer it only cost me an extra $40. I still think it's worth it.
