RPM Fluctuation

I've noticed when slowing down, almost right before I'm completely stopped, the rpm's will go from about 500 to 1,000, before resting at idle.

I notice it now because I put a cat back on my truck, so when the rpm fluctuated, I could hear the motor more. In turn, this caused me to watch my RPM's more. It could have been doing this from day one, but I've only noticed it since getting rid of the stock exhaust.

Mine does it too, with the stock exhaust. I believe its the transmission down-shifting when coming to a stop. Nothing to worry about.

That's what I was thinking - thanks for the reassurance.

That's normal on pretty much any vehicle equipped with an automatic transmission. Other than the downshifting, it's also that the engine management signaled a slight blip of the throttle so that the engine doesn't drop below stall speed and stall.

So it's a-okay

What's strange is how noticeable it is on this truck.

I guess, although paying specific attention to the tachometer doesn't help either

I don't know about you, but when I hear the motor louder than normal, the first place my eyes go are to the tach.
