As some of you may know, I'm pretty anal when it comes to keeping records on all my vehicles. I have an Excel sheet that shows all my fill ups at cost, gallons, mileage, along with oil changes, their cost, and any other maintenance. My Tacoma cost me $7.52 a day to operate (total expenditures on gas, maintenance, etc), but my Tundra is costing me a whopping $15.57 a day to run I didn't think it was going to be that big of a difference! But hey, it's a truck, so I just take it I also figure that I'm averaging 75 miles a day, but it's slowly going down with the wife driving it 23 miles to and from work. Just something I thought I'd share with my fellow Tundra owners (or lurkers) here.
BTW, I my Tundra

yep.. even tho the taco and tundra sticker mpg is similar.. when you actually drive them both .. im sure the tundra will burn more gas.. but if you run 0w20 synthetic oil or just 5w-20 dino oil.. just the extra 2 quarts of oil can add up or the synthetic price adds up..
What extra costs are you seeing, compared to a Tundra? Would you mind sharing your spreadsheet? I've currently got a Tacoma, but after a motorcycle wreck last March my left knee has been bothering me and I need to consider an automatic - so I'm looking at a Tundra.
Part of the reason the op cost is higher is because of 5mpg less than that of the Taco. Also, I have just shy of 10k miles on the truck now, and I've only owned it 5 months, the Taco had 10k in 10 months...so driving the Tundra more is making the cost higher. Conversely, the operating cost for the Taco was 20.9 cents per mile and the Tundra is running slightly lower at 20.3 cpm.

I like the cents/mile number better. What mpg were you getting in your Taco (and what year/model) and what are you getting now in your Tundra (also what model)? Thanks very much. My 6spd Taco averages around 14-15 in the city, and 16-17 on the highway, so I'd love to increase that if I do end up getting a new truck.

I was getting 19mpg in the Taco (06 Reg Cab 4 cylinder 4x4) and that was always a mix up between city and highway. The Tundra (5.7L 4x4) is averaging 14-15. Remember too that gas was slightly cheaper when I had the Taco and has gone up $0.40 cents or so since I got the truck.

Well it sounds like I won't lose any mpg going to a 5.7 Tundra, but probably wouldn't gain any, either. For losing 5 mpg in the Tundra, why is your cents/mile better compared to the Tacoma? Was it just due to maintenance costs that haven't yet accumulated on the Tundra?

Yeah, that's my guess. I did do a lot of preventative maintenance that wasn't even due...like diff fluid change ($55) oil change every 3k miles (instead of waiting for the light). Those few extra dollars make a difference...

..
And that price will go up as the truck gets older because of wear and tear....dont worry about it and enjoy your truck.
I am I just wanted to pass it along to anyone that is considering buying the truck and doesn't think they can afford it...
haha yeah, owning a vehicle is like having a pet animal. It's gonna cost you no matter what, but down the line it wouldn't matter when it becomes unconditional love
