New Tundra Owner

I am a first time truck owner and I bought a 07 Tundra SR5 4.7L. I really wanted the 5.7L but my wife drives the truck as well. When we test drove the 5.7L I swear she almost made salesman crap his pants and gave me a heart attack. It is too powerful for her and I do not want to see this truck at a body shop or her in a hospital.

So we drove the 4.7L and I was impressed with its power and I am happy with it. I am not going to tow anything except maybe a bass boat.

My neighbor has a 4.7L and he pulls a big camper and it did very well so I am not to worried over bass boat. My first truck so I am getting used to handling it and the drive is so different from a car. I drove Saturn VUE for 5 years my god I am hooked on trucks now. I will stay a Toyota Tundra owner and I am happy with Toyota's quality and service I get from my dealership.

I love this forum and look forward to chatting with you guys. I am learning so much about Tundra's from everyone of you that post in this forum. Thanks you very much for all the information a guy could want for his Tundra.

This seems like the perfect thread for me as I am looking to buy a new Tundra.

Financially, getting the 4.7 makes so much more sense to me, BUT I hear such great things about the 5.7 that I am scared to even test drive it b/c I may want it so badly haha.

Please convince me the 4.7 is more than enough power and I wont regret not getting the 5.7?

Not going to try and convince you. You will regret not going with the 5.7 if you get one. I had both the 4.7 in an 06 and the 5.7 and there is a big difference. I am so glad I upgraded. I tow a travel trailer around 6500lbs and it pulls it like it isn't back there. My 4.7 did ok with it but you could tell it was there and didn't handle it like the 5.7. Step up and pay the extra because it's a fun truck with that engine in it. Good Luck!!!!

Go big or go home.

It'll pay for itself in resale late down the road...

I bought an '07 5.7L 2WD for towing a 28' center console offshore boat. The towing ability of this truck is phenomenal and gets pretty good mileage while towing, all things considered. It tows better than any gas powered 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton truck I've ever driven...granted I never drove the V10 F250 but thats a 9mpg highway driver, not suited for everyday driving and just weekend boat towing.

When shopping, I drove all the 1/2 tons, and liked the new Silverado the best before I drove the Tundra. But I flushed that thought down the toilet after driving the Tundra. It outperfoms every other 1/2 ton to a noticeable degree...and the mileage is 2-3 mpg better than the 6.0L Chevy V8 that I would need to get similar tow capacity. Amazingly, this isn't because of a light chassis...Tundra weighs more than the American trucks. Everyday driving I get about 15mpg, a little worse than my 4.6L F150 I previously owned but that truck was a slug. Highway mileage is good because of the 6 speed tranny with a high gear overdrive. I think D3 trannys on 1/2 tons are still 4-speed. But it takes some getting used to starting out from a dead stop...the power and torque are immediate and if you bump the pedal hard from a dead stop the truck will snap forward.

Glad to hear you are liking (or loving?) your truck. I think a lot of people unfairly criticize the Tundra...the new Tundra in my eyes is above all 1/2 trucks as far as drivetrain and features, and it is playing with with half the 3/4 ton boys...I just laugh though when I see what Ford and Chevy have done to take cheap shots at it, though... It's not perfect (like any car or truck), but a hell of a lot better than 'domestic'.
