07 Tundra Gas Mileage

Hello, I recently bought a 2007 toyota tundra a couple of months back..The sticker says that I should (epa) be getting 16 & 20...I'm struggling to get 12 or sometimes 13 mi to the gallon in town..I only have 3700 mi and I baby the truck, so I'm wondering if the just needs to be broken in some more..I talk to others who have new tundras ,not as new as mine, and they are getting much better gas mileage...

Anyone else having this problem???

Thanks
Beau Benoit

I've had my Tundra almost 2 months now and I'm averaging over 15 mpg. Which is about 2 mpg better than my Dodge Hemi. On the open road I average 19+, then again it depends on the terrane. I only have about 1700 miles on mine, so possiblly will get a little better. Also I have a reg cab standard bed which maybe a little lighter than yours. I live in hilly country and therefor it is a little harder to get good gas mileage, also I like the select shift option. I tent to up and down shift the transmission more than it would do by itself.

Remember that EPA mileage estimates have now decreased according to their new standards, so now the 08's rate the same engine with 14 and 18 respectively. I am averaging around 15 mpg, with mostly city driving, but hey, it's a truck. And it also all depends on how you drive, the weather (humidity and temp) and others around you (traffic and such).

I drive a combination of city and highway and get about 15mpg average. In overdrive at 70+mph the computer shows mpg in the mid 20's when stable, but rapidly falls to less than 10 when accelerating. This truck has a lot of torque and power; its a heavy machine with a big engine with low gearing. Gas mileage will never be ideal but the 6-speed tranny gives you the industry best of low-end torque and highway speed.

I'm averaging around say 12 to 13 MPG. I do however have a 4x4 Crewmax and I'm running 20 inch wheels with 33's. It's funny, I am just fine with that, like others, I realize that it's a heavy truck running a big engine, so I expected about that.
I saw a Club Cab Tundra running around town with a magnetic sign and stickers on all of the windows (basically an advertisement) knocking our local dealership, and showing 12 MPH in big bold letters with "THIRSTY AT THE PUMP" right below it. Got my attention, I pulled around to see what was plastered all over his rig. What a joke in my opinion, it's not like he/she bought a Prius (which I own to off-set my shitty gas mileage).

Yes, it is pretty rediculous that people expect good gas mileage...maybe they have Toyota's 40mpg Corolla or 42mpg Hybrids, but jesus, this is a truck. What did they expect Even the popular Tahoe and Suburban, an origional body-on-frame soccer mom SUV gets 12-14mpg!

Ahhh, I remember the good old days when I was getting 13.3, this tank I got 11. But I did spend quiet a bit of time in 4WD.

Among D3 1/2 tons, the Tundra compares closest to the new Silverado (Sierra for GMC fans) with max tow package. Even with a 3.73 rear end (Tundra has 4.3), the Chevy gets a full 2-3 mpg less than the Tundra. That's with the 6.0L Vortex. That's based on a friend's numbers who drives in conditions similar to mine. Now, I really like the new GM and would jump on one in a heartbeat if Toyota didn't make this Tundra, but that is the closest apples-to-apples comparison and not only does it perform less, its burns more fuel.

^^ You said it. Toyota could get better mileage by offering a 3.73 on non-tow equipped Tundra's, but why? A truck is a truck! 4.10 will suffice, and the 4.3 is king (especially with the engine/tranny combo).

You guys are talking about choosing 4.1 and 4.3 rear axle ratios, but when I've tried to build my Tundra on Toyota's website I don't get the choice of a tow package or not. Is the tow package already included in the SR5 trim level?

Yes, it is included already. The only way to get rid of the tow package is to get the appearance package.

SR5 double cab, 5.7 with tow pack. Purch'd in August. Getting 16.2 in town and averaged 21.4 going from Austin, Tx. to New Mexico. Just lucky I guess from all the other reports.
