MPG in lower gears

I was wondering if anybody has checked the MPG running the truck in lower gears like 4th or 5th? Does the MPG go down running in 4th or 5th all the time?

Not if you are using those gears downhill for compression braking, because fuel delivery is almost shut off. Otherwise, yes. Why do you ask?

cruising in 4th at 70mph will yield a lower mpg than cruising in 5th at 70mph, which will be a lower mpg than cruising in 6th at 70mph.

I was just wondering because I dont do much highway driving. I drive mostly short distances. I was just wondering if driving in 4th or 5th would hurt the miles too bad.

Why would you want to do that? You're going to get your best mpg at ~50mph (+/- a little) in top gear.
