A guy I work with is considering buying a Ford F-150. So I asked why not consider a tundra and he tells me he saw a story about tundra tailgates falling apart. Any truth to the story or anyone else seen this? I would pick a tundra over anything and Ford would be on the bottom of my list.
He's right, the tailgate is a piece of garbage. I'll do a search, there are quite a few threads at TundraSolutions about it.
*edit*
I haven't had any real issues with mine, the seams aren't broken, but it does really warp if I stand on it. It is a real piss poor design, if Toyota wanted to make this truck "heavy-duty", why do we have to take the tailgate off to load the bed?

It won't buckle from people sitting or standing on it. It seems most failures are loading lawn mowers or ATVs.
P.S. the Ford is actually a pretty good truck....it's just weak compared to a Titan or Tundra (5.7). I know the Ford is rated almost as high as the Nissan. But after a test drive it's clear Ford's 5.4 is lame.

The latest Silverado/Sierra seem to be weak in this area also. I am disappointed that pickups are now engineered mainly as tow vehicles, at the expense of carrying payload in the bed.

Sorry, but this is pure .
The bed rails are a little "weak", but my tailgate is as solid as ever. I put on sstl bed rails to protect them.
One of the reasons vehicles are being more "tow oriented" is because people don't want the ride associated with higher payload vehicles. Remember, half the people in the market for a truck want a Cadillac ride (which is a crock in the first place)
I think the OE's should just put a HD suspension in trucks for the payload capacity and then have airseats as seen in big rigs

I use mine for work mostly, no problems yet. Havent loaded a quad in it yet but no issues with various construction material. If Ford had the best tailgate that ever was, is, or will be I still wouldn't consider buying one. I'd hate to say never, but it'll be a long time before I own another ford, or gm for that matter, product.

yeah the new tundra's have lots of problems. the tail gate not unlocking, or not coming down smoothly. that is what happens the first couple of years when a new model comes out. it is like that for every chevy, dodge, or ford truck. it takes trial and error, to see what works and what doesn't. i would take a toyota truck over any other truck any day.

To follow up on this the guy at work ended up buying a 2008 ford f-150. They showed him a pic of the 09 f-150 but he didnt want to wait a few months. I dont have many miles on my tundra and only problem ive had was the torque coverter went bad but the dealer fixed it in a day and no problems since. other then that i love the truck wouldnt own anything else

Every Chevy huh? Hmmm Funny, all 3 of my GM trucks (89, 2000, 2007) have been new model year trucks and I have experienced hardly any "1st year" issues.
Is a tailgate something new for Toyota? How can you attribute a tailgate (or torque converter) issue to being a "1st year" issue? Last time I checked, all previous Toyota trucks had tailgates and torque converters.
Yeah the Ford is only lacking in the engine department, otherwise a solid truck IMO. I don't really care if I have a tailgate problem (or torque converter for that matter) because I know Toyota will stand behind their product and fix it no questions asked.

That is a "new " Toyota Tundra tailgate, and it is a "new" torque converter (and whole new transmission).
The torque converter problems can be attributed to first year teething problems maybe. The tailgate thing is absurd though.....Toyota should have caught that sooner!
Did any of your 3 trucks have the neat cold solder-joint windshield wiper circuit boards? Good times! How long had GM been using windshield wipers!

Huh? I've never heard anything about this?? What are you talking about?
I had zero issues with the 89. The only issues I had with the 2000 was the int steering shaft, which was fixed permanently the first time (most people had reoccuring problems with this), sticky throttle body (replaced), and I had the rear wing windows replaced for excessive wind noise due to a poor initial window frame design which GM redesigned and replaced for anyone with an issue (something Toyota needs to do with the tailgate). On the 2007 all I have had so far was a very minor oil leak due to a leaky o-ring on the crank position sensor, unfortunately, it took the dealer 3 tries to figure it out.
Oh, and the main issue I have with the new GM's is all of the E-nannies they put in, but that too has been taken care of with a Performance Tune from Nelson Performance.....ZERO TM and ZERO Nannies and I am now running over 400HP and 400Tq. Tundra who?
