Have transmision problems been fixed?

Looking for a new Full Size PU and the Tundra is on my short list. I read of the transmission problems and wanted to know if there was some way I can avoid having the problem before I buy.

Is it fixed now? Is it only fixed on trucks built past a given date? Can I detect the problem on a test drive?

Any help would be appreciated

They isolated the problem, and are fixing it on vehicles that have it. Shouldn't happen anymore with the new model year - my '08 doesn't have any issues.

1) A few problems with torque converters....giving the "rumble strip" sound.
2) A rear propeller shaft problem on some 2007 4WD models. Recall item....I'm getting it looked at Monday when I take mine in for it's reg. pm.

No...I meant does anyone know what the torque converter problem was? What exactly was wrong with the transmissions themselves? Fluid choice, software program, component failure, adjustment, or a design flaw.

Many years ago 1986 front drive Buick LaSabre's and Olds 88's had transmission problems when GM substituted a delron sleeve bearing to replace a steel one. After a few thousand miles, the transmission would not shift from 3rd to overdrive. I know, they replaced three transmissions in my car. The final fix for me was the installation of a factory remanufactured "88" tranmission.

I assumed it was a fault with torque converter itself, seeing as the fix was to replace the torque converter. I don't know if there has been a new part number released for the torque converters, or if it was just the early components from the new plants that had issues.

I had the rumble strip on my brand new truck, I got a hold of toyota and they sent it back to the dealer were i bought it, ave me a brand new courtesy 4 runner and fixed it, It is the torque converter and its only on the early 2007, and if you went to test the truck and it had the problem you would know about it in a heart beat, just make sure you take it on a 30 minute test drive and the tranny shifts a few different times, its identical to going over rumble strips on the highway, I guess thats why they called it the rumble strip problem.

I don't think the bad torque converters were early '07s. From reading posts and polls on various Tundra forums, most complaints on this started with trucks built around June/July of 07. Very few complaints from any earlier ones. In fact, I've read posts of people buying their truck in Nov/Dec '07 and they had the rumble strip.

I have a March 07 build Tundra and it does not have this problem.

Yep, that is true. In fact, I have also read several reports of 08's with this problem too. I do not think this has been resolved yet.

July 07 build date, crossing my fingers!! So far the truck has been awesome, even during our harsh winter up here. Only thing that is annoying is the VSC kicking on, on start offs with the roads icy. Especially when you have a Chevy *** ridding with you. For one they are always looking for something to point out, and that damn VSC making that god aweful noise doesnt help.

I believe you're right. What's also interesting is that the official TSB on this "Transmission Shudder" issue does not specify any VIN number ranges like most TSBs do. It simply says that it applies to 2007 and 2008 model year Tundras.
