2008 Tundra Test Drive today

Well, I am new to this forum and in the market for a new Truck. I want something nice(4 door) and I do have some towing needs. I currently have a 2003 Dodge Ram Quad Cab with the 4.7 engine in it. Truck has been bullet proof and super reliable. I have a 21' fishing boat that I haul back and forth to Cape Cod from Ct. and the boat is a little tough on the truck on hills.
The Dodge platform itself handles the boat effortlessly but the 4.7 engine/Trans combo works pretty hard on hills. I am guessing that the trailer/boat/fuel and gear are around 4500 lbs.

I know it may be a strretch to get an unbiased opinion on this forum but...
The test drive I took today was pretty impressive. This 5.7 is a peppy truck. I was grinning pretty good under acceleration. Needless to say, this truck should easily tow 5000lbs.

Am looking for some towing impressions if you have any to share..

Here's an unbiased opinion for you: If you are happy with Dodge, stick with them. Currently in my area (just above you) the Ram 1500 Mega and Quad cabs have a $6000 rebate on them, while the Ram 2500 Mega and Quad cabs have a $4500 rebate and they will more than likely give you the best trade in for your current truck.

As for the towing, the Tundra with the 5.7 tows 5,000 pounds with little effort.

This place has good info about real Tundra owners doing some real towing. Do a search for the "Toyota Tundra" and you'll have a lot of hits. Now keep in mind you have to sift through the bull poo....because there is an extreme amount of Toyota (and import) haters. But the signatures show who the owners are.

I just got an 08 with the 5.7 and it tows my 25' boat (approx. 6500 lbs) extremely well. It tows almost as well as my F250 diesel that I traded in for the Tundra. I don't think you will any problems at all towing 5000 lbs.

You'll have no problem towing a boat. I tow a 30 foot travel trailer that is around 6000lb dry and time I pack it up, we are over 7000lbs easy and it tows like it isn't back there. This is with the 5.7 though. I had an 06 4.7 and it towed the same trailer ok but nothing like the 5.7. Good luck with your hunt!!!!

I owned a 2005 Tundra with 4WD and Crew cab. I knew the 4.7 engine it had would be weak towing the travel trailer I intend to order so I took a look at the 2008 with a 5.7. A test drive and I was hooked. I traded mine off and now I'm the proud owner of a 2008 with a 5.7 engine. Now all I need is a little more money to buy the trailer. I hope to tow something weighing around 6,000 Lbs and do not anticipate any problems.

What trailer are you wanting to get? We have an Outback and love it!!!!! We are retired and there will be just the two of us. So far we have decided on the Rockwood 2605. I like the design with the exception of the shortened queen bed. The new Tundra whould be able to pull it with ease.

If you've been happy with the Dodge Ram, I'd probably stick with a brand new 2008 Dodge Ram with the 5.7 Hemi. With Dodge offering a Lifetime Powertrain warranty to the original owner, it is definately hard to beat.
