Anybody out there got any tips for safe, proper towing of an 8400 lb. (loaded), 26' travel trailer. I have a 2008 double cab, 4WD, Limited? You know - tow mode or not, cruise control, engine braking, which gear for best performance and MPGs? Thanks in advance

Your payload capacity is 1560 lbs. Your tongue weights will be around 840-1260 depending on if the tongue weight is 10-15% of the total weight of the TT. I point this out because you don't want to have too much weight inside your truck....every accessory added to your truck is deducted from the 1560 figure too, step bars, spray in bed liners, bumper guards etc. Once you know you're not going to exceed your truck's GVWR (7,100 lbs)....you're almost ready to tow.
Do you have a good weight distributing system (WDH)? Of course use the tow mode. Cruise control is not recommend for towing beginers.....but if you do find yourself on a desolate stretch, it won't hurt anything. I can't help with gears though, except it's wise to lock out 6th with that much weight. Being in 6th gear in and of itself won't hurt anything......but if the transmission hunts constantly between 6th, 5th, 6th, 4th etc.....it's a bad thing. That will create a lot of heat, and something will break eventually.

Keep in mind that the tow/haul function does not work in "S" mode, so if you do choose to opt out of those higher gears, you won't be getting help from the computer/engine/tranny.

I have a 2007 Crew Cab 4X4 SR5 and tow a 30 foot trailer usually loaded a little over 7,000 lbs. I run in overdrive everywhere except when I'm pulling some big hills here in Tennessee and then I will turn on tow mode but take it off when I clear the hills. I never use cruise control towing and don't think it's recommended towing but that's me. I only change gears when i'm in traffic or pulling hills but you will know when that time is right to do it and when I do it, it's mostly to go faster. lol Recommended though is a weight distribution hitch and Prodigy Brake Controller. When the time comes around to change tires, go with a D or E rated tire also. Good Luck and feel free to ask me questions.

It sure does sound like it's in limits! As long as you don't have 5 each 250 lb guys in the truck with you, you'll be fine! Good luck.......where are you camping first?

You will be fine trust me. Since you have the hitch, get a Prodigy brake controller and have some camping fun. Ours has a loaded weight like you mention but you'll never hit it unless you tow the camper full of fresh, gray and black tanks full, which will never happen. When we travel, there is the 4 of us, the dog, wood, bikes and few misc stuff in and in back of the truck. The camper is loaded with clothes, food, drinks ect. and I run 70-80 down the road like it isn't back there. TOWS GREAT!!!!
