Canada Ford bashes new Tundra with goofy contradicting comparison

Now i don't own a Tundra but my dad is looking at one here soon.

I found a few videos well worth a laugh: I made a few arumentative comments underneath the videos and the perp who is posting them deleted them so i suppose he didn't like my factual comments.

The link you provided is actually a good point though for Ford. Many Titan and Armada owners who are serious about towing have upgraded to LT tires. I am not too sure about the Tundra owners because, there doesn't seem to be too many here who tow a lot.

LT tires have a higher load capacity. That in and of itself might not be important since the payload capacity of the truck will likely reach the limit before the factory "P" or passenger tires do. Where LT tires shine is the number of plies and sidewall stiffness. Stiffer sidewalls make for more stability; however the downside is greater unsprung weight, which means slower acceleration, and rougher ride.

It comes down to how you use your truck.....if you pick up groceries and plants from Home Depot, P tires are OK. But if you want to approach the Tundra's 10,300 lb towing limit.....you'd better have LT tires.

Ford is retarded though.....particularly with the "engine" comparison. They compare their awesome 3-valve-per-cyl 5.4 against "conventional" 2-valve-per-cyl engines like GM and Hemi.......talking about the superiority of 3 vs. 2. And yet those morons somehow forget to mention the Titan's 5.6 DOHC 32 valve motor, and of course Tundra's 5.7 DOHC 32 valve engine.

IMO anyone who buys anything based on what a commercial says is a complete moron. The Tundras towing of 10300lbs doesn't have an * beside it, this rating is based on as equipped. Also notice they actually did something to there truck to achieve this rating eg. beefed up brakes, engine, powertrain in general, while others (ford,gm) seem to be able to magically increase payload past the gvrw for chev and increase towing by up to 3000lbs with not doing anything to the truck. I find this advertisement on par with the ridiculous Tundra beating everything in a tug o war videos. Completely pointless garbage.

You claim Ford and GM did nothing to their trucks to get up to 3k lbs added to their ratings? How do you figure?

Toyota literally does have an "*" next to it's 10,300 rating.
-The astrix says, "When equipped with Sport Appearance Package, standard towing capacity decreases to 8300 lbs."
-There is also a note "4"....and it says, "Before towing, confirm your vehicle and trailer are compatible, hooked up and loaded properly and that you have any necessary additional equipment. Do not exceed any Weight Ratings and follow all instructions in your Owner's Manual. The maximum you can tow depends on the total weight of any cargo, occupants and available equipment."

I will say this though....Toyota's Towing Guide is very good! I think more people should read this personally. http://a230.g.akamai.net/7/230/2320/...wing_guide.pdf

I was referring to no asterisk about changing your tires if you wanted to "approach the 10300lb tow rating" as you said. It is rated to tow that as is from the lot. Also I'm pretty sure all truck makers suggest your truck and trailer are compatible. Check out fords history and you will see them up there tow rating many times without changing anything substantial. Also if you want to get technical, the tundras tow rating is actually 10800lbs in certain models.

"Ford states a properly equipped 2007 F-150 (Long Wheel Base, 2WD model only) can now tow up to 11,000 lb (5,000 kg) maximum and 1800-3050 lb maximum payload, though Ford has not indicated any design changes occurred to support the upgraded towing capacity numbers from the previous model years. The original tow rating of 9,900 lb (4,500 kg) was raised to 10,500 lb (4,800 kg) upon announcement of the new 2007 Chevrolet Silverado's 10,500 lb maximum towing capacity. Ford again raised the F-150's maximum towing capacity number to 11,000 lb (5,000 kg) upon announcement of the new 2007 Toyota Tundra's 10,800 lb (4,900 kg) maximum towing capacity. The 2004-2008 F-150 model years are mechanically identical, and no technical explanation has been offered by Ford regarding the increase in tow ratings."

Thats 1 example. 1100lbs increase with no change. Wheres the video about that?

^^^ Maybe the Ford was already capable of towing 11,000lb, but they "sandbagged" the numbers prior to Chevy and Toyota releasing theirs. I dunno, just a thought

stryker....I now understand what you meant about asterisk/tires. You're right (I would have to assume) about the Tundra's tires being "rated" enough to tow the published weight, as much as 10,800. I was just pointing out that LT tires would be better for that kind of load.

One thing about the magical "11,000 lb" tow capable F-150.....good luck finding one. It is a very specific model truck, and I have heard from a few folks that they don't stock them, but rather you have to order it from the factory through the dealership. But the fact it is available, allows Ford to advertise the "most capable 1/2 ton tow rating". Cheesy, I know...I am not defending them on that.

But as to differing ratings year-by-year, it happens all the time. And it might be something as simple as tires. Ford has different ratings for 16" wheeled trucks vs. 17" wheels vs. 18" wheels. Dodge Rams with factory 20" wheels have a notably lower tow rating than the ones with 17" wheels etc. And maybe, like Echo stated, Ford has sandbagged their previous ratings to stay up on the competition when they up the ante. They have done it before, specifically referring to 2004.......The all new F-150 came first, yet no rating were released. The Nissan came out with the Titan with a legit 9,400 lb tow rating.....and "magically" after Nissan published their numbers, Ford announced the F-150 can tow 9,500!

I can add that Ford did add an extra leaf in the back, plus heavier duty oil and transmission coolers on the truck rated for 11k lbs. But it's still a weak-on-power truck.

Euro, I can agree it would be nice for the Tundra to come stock with LT tires, but most people wouldn't need them based on what they use the truck for. Also, if they added every feature to make everyone happy, it would be pretty hard to get the truck out the door for under $60k. My original point I was trying, maybe not so clearly, to make was just the lame assed commercials people come up with to sell trucks, like these ones by ford, the driving across a snowy ditch on an angle and stopping in the ditch to show great traction by chev, and the giant seesaw one from toyota. Just curious, did ford do anything to there brakes to help stop this new higher tow load?

Yeah, we're on the same page! I agree LT tires would be bothersome for many (if not most owners).

Honestly, I do believe the brakes are upgraded over the regular F-150....but I can't be certain. Here's why I say that; F-150's with the huge payload and towing #'s have 7 lug wheels. So do Ford F-250's. I suspect that Ford just uses the F-250 hubs and possibly axles on the "HD" F-150's, but they don't advertise that because it might steal F-250 sales. Just a theory though.

The "P" series tires that come standard on our trucks are sufficient to haul the kind of weight that the trucks are licensed to haul. However, if towing or hauling a lot, they will wear out at an incredible pace. If that is the case, they 6 or 10 ply LT tires should be used.

As for the Ford claims, it is indeed a very specific model that can do that, and is typically only available as a special order. If people want to haul that much, they usually just go buy an F-250 or F-350. Also, the seven stud HD F-150 are gone. It was a 1/2 ton specific hub, wheel and brake assembly that they sold too few of and was too expensive to produce and sell in such low numbers. F-250's (and F-350's for that matter) all use 8 stud wheels, however the brakes, hubs, and bearings are different between the 3/4 and 1 ton models. The F-150 is a completely different cat altogether.

Not for 2008....the 7 lug wheels are still available. http://www60.forddirect.fordvehicles...sh&statetoken=
If you select the 4.10 gear ratio, then click the "wheels" tab, you'll see it specifically states 7-lug wheels.
2009 might be different, but none of that will matter because the Ford propaganda videos are talking about 2008 vs. 2008.

They did the same thing when the new F150 came out. Titan had better numbers, and Ford suddenly change their numbers to be higher than the Titan. lol.
