Transmission Issue

Towed my 3500 pound boat to the keys, after my first fuel stop I re-entered the highway and merged into traffic, transmission would not shift out of 4th gear, I tried to make it shift by letting up on throttle but nothing, I pulled the shifter over to manual shift, bumped it up to fifth gear and it changed then sixth, shifted it back over to automatic when I passed a car and accelerated causing a downshift it became stuck again, will not do it now with out the boat and cool. Any ideas, oh yea I forgot I was pulling a 3500 lb boat including trailer and fuel and my truck got about 9 mpg on highway, that sucks!!! what happens when I pull the capacity of 10,600 lbs, will I get about 2mpg, cmon toyota, Im losing faith

You fail to mention how fast you were going. 9 MPG is poor no doubt, but basically, any time you tow, it's unlikely you see anything higher than 12 MPG.

If you ever get the chance to tow 10,600 lbs, you'd probably get 7 MPG.

did you have it on the tow feature? how did you know it was in 4th? maybe the ecu knows that your towing and didnt wanna shift out of its power band since it does shift in all gears when not towing

I tried the truck in both tow haul mode and regular mode. When I would accelerate to pass truck would downshift and rev to 4000 to 4500 rpm. Then it would not drop below that rpm unless i either slowed down or manually shifted. The reason Im guessing 4th is when I upshifted manually I recieved 2 distinct rpm changes, so I was guessing 4th.

Transmissions in these trucks is a little different, Im not use to being able to feel it downshift when im slowing down, i mean if Im going down a bridge and let off gas and drift it downshifts and feels just like I was in a manual transmission truck.
