I'm an 08 Crewmax owner, and whilst I love the truck... the paint is beyond crap. I've noticed quite a few others have the same problem, and when I bought the truck, I saw the adverts, you know... the truck skidding round, having tons of stuff shoved in the back, grrrrr... its a meaty, tough, truck that'd stand up to the day-to-day action and more.
How wrong I was.
The paint looks as though it was blown on by a 13 year old Thai ladyboy from 6 feet away (well, actually it would probably be better!). It appears as though its one coat over primer, with no clear coat.
Now, I believed Toyota's hype about the truck, and whilst I love every part of it... the paints a huge problem, with several scratches around the truck in the first 2 weeks over careful ownership and the back bed (which you would think would be the most protected probably with what should be similar to the rock guard) has been scratched deeply down to the primer simply by putting in a bed mat.
This is not good enough. Toyota (despite having to confirm to EPA regulations) has SEVERELY skimped on the paint on this truck and got it wrong..
If you're a Tundra owner, and want to complain, then I'd really appreciate it if you could spend 2 seconds signing the petition - you don't have to be a member and no registration is required - I'd also really appreciate it if you could get the word out and get as many people as possible to sign this petition. Once sufficient signatures have been reached then I intend to take this Toyota and the press. Thanks All!

I have an '07 and I am very happy with my paint job. I had a Silverado before this and the Tundra is loads better than tha Chevy. What color is yours by the way?
Mines black.. but there was a thread on another forum that said some colours had clearcoat... I think the biggest problem with mine, is the lack of a clear coat - I can scratch the paint (and have done) simply by dragging (with no pressure) my key across the paint - it instantly goes down to the primer

Same here. Mine is Salsa red. I even had my tailgate down and drove into a wll, the tailgate went through the sheetrock and still no scratches: NO!!! Damage to my Tundra!
Don't ask me what I was thinking (or not thinking)
As for your paint, have you contacted the dealer or the 1800 customer service line?
All tundra's get clearcoat and it would never have made it off the line if it didn't. It would be very obvious if it did not have clearcoat.
Where was yours manufacutred, San Antonio, TX or Princeton, IN? I work at the SA plant paint shop.
I have heard other stories about the bed scratching to easily by sliding things in/out, but never heard of people keying their own truck to see if the paint will hold up.

HAd my hood removed from my 08 white Crewmax and repainted. HAd 36oo miles on it. There were six avocado sized spots on the hood under the clearcoat. My truck ,since it's been in my possession, has only been hand washed with ADAMS Polishes products! The spots were visibleon overcast days . Took several phone calls to the 800 number and visits to the dealership. I'll keep you posted on how it holds up. I'll sign your petition.......spent my valuable time on making right something that should have been right from the beginning on a $46,000 plus truck!
It is in fact thinner than what you are probably use to. All of the newer paint jobs coming out of factory are waterbase paints, which really suck! Even the new Chevy trucks are. I hate the paint, but there is nothing we can really do , but complain and hope they hear us.

The primer and base coats are waterbase paint but the clearcoat is still a solvent base paint.
