ever wonder what happens to the old left over models like the 07 that dont sell. does toyota take them back and then what? re vin them and sell them again as 08s? lol
some might say they stay on the lot till its sold.. but they can only keep 07s for so long.. what happens when 09 comes around..
Toyota is a very smart company. Unlike other auto makers, Toyota only build a vehicle when a dealer orders one. So if it goes unsold it is not Toyota's problem, the dealer must reduce the price.

makes sense.. since we got a solara convertible that use to be 30k+ now going for 22k lol
They cannot change the VIN, too many legal complications, emissions, etc. Chrysler, which is the worst about building cars that are not ordered, used to make employees who are entitled to a company car drive the unwanted leftovers. Toyota seems to do some of that today. I know a Toyota vendor employee who is driving a Solara from the Toyota Motor Sales fleet while waiting for his Prius to be repaired or totalled. GM actually scrapped some unsold Isuzu-built pickups many years ago. They were starting to rust away in storage lots.
That's cause even after a big discount, people still don't want em. Honda's and Toyota's sell even in hard times, then throw an end of year clearance discount...their all sold!

kinda true.. toyota already reduce production of their larger sized trucks/suv.
but i have noticed a large increase in sales of prius, corolla, yaris, and scions

Could that have anything to do with the price of gas?

a lot of the unsold new vehicles end up at dealer only auctions. last thursday toyota ran aorund 500 units 07 and 08's many with less then 10 miles thru the auction that i attend. weekly they run around 250 units. thats where a lot of the unsolds go. so i don't hink they are building only to fill orders.
you'd be blown away if you knew how much i buy tundras for. the 07+ tundra and camry are the first toyotas i've seen that just do not hold their value like older models did! camry is doing better now that gas is so high but the quality is just not there and people are starting to recognize that.

how much dooo you get teh 07 tundra for at the auctions
Tundras have to get hammered like all other gas-guzzling trucks right now, its the combination of high gas price and decline in construction trades. The last one is less important because fewer Tundras have ended up in fleets compared to F-150 and Silverado/Sierra.
the dealer you work for could get you one for around that price if they wanted to. the key word there ibeing "wanted", and unfortunatly many are not as kind to their employees as they pretend to be. "employee pricing" is not really the best price.
