Input on Cool Air intake

I was thinking about adding a CAI for my 2008 Tundra. I have never added an aftermarket intake to any of my cars in the past. After browsing through some of the Tundra forums, I got to thinking that this might be something I would like to add. People seemed to say that it wasn't to difficult to add myself. I have always wanted to do some things myself to my vehicles, but I have always been a little nervous. I guess you have to start somewhere, and back when I used to do a lot of Car stereo stuff, I was in the same boat at one point, and with a little trial and error I got pretty good at it and then I was good enough that my friends would ask me to do it for them. I am little more nervous doing this, because it is involving engines which I have no knowledge what so ever on.

Wanted some input.
1.Has any one added a CAI themselves to there Tundra.
2. What did they put on, and are they happy with the results.
3. Most importantly...What does it do to Warranty ect. Searched several posts and I didn't see this mentioned anywhere.

Thanks for your time guys. I would love to have this be a weekend project sometime in the next few weeks.

The most important thing here is warranty. I dont know if you have smog checks in SC, probably not. If the computer detects a fault and throws a code, it will flunk smog, where there are periodic inspections, and that is in a lot more places than just CA.

Then you go to the dealer to make a claim under the emissions warranty. Many service writers will tell you to put the stock air box back on before they will even write the order. Some wont, but you will be stuck with the bill if the MAF sensor needs to be cleaned.

Modifications to the intake system that produce more noise than stock for commercial vehicles is also a violation of Federal law. All pickups are registered commercial in CA, your state may vary.

Wow....never thought about the inspections. That might be an issue if I ever moved back to Texas. At this moment South Carolina doesn't have any of these specific inspections. Does it void any Waranty with Toyota?

The stock system in the Tundra is pretty efficient. I tried the Volant CAI in mine and was not impressed. It sounded nice but didn't gain any MPG's and actually seemed to slow the throttle response. As for HP or Torque Gains I never Dyno'd it but didn't feel a thing. I returned it. My father-in-law put a drop-in TRD filter and has noticed a little bit better throttle response but nothing else really. So, if you are going for more MPG's don't bother. If you want more HP, there are other things like exhaust with more benefit. If you want more of the V8 sound then go for it. As for install, the Volant is really easy, about a 15 minute job with basic tools. I wasn't overly impressed with the fitment of the Volant either.

The warranty will not be voided unless the CAI is shown to be the cause of the problem. That being said many CAI's have oiled filters which can cause the Mass Air Flow Sensor to "gum" up throwing a check engine light and code. That is why I went with the Volant which has a dry flter. The only CAI on the market you can add and not worry about warranty is of course the TRD system. So, if you are worried about warranty try the TRD.

Thank you so much for your input. After a lot of research and your comments I think I will pass on an aftermarket CAI. I had also heard that the stock intake is really good. I also banged up my front fender flare tonight. It is sticking out in the front about a 1/4 inch. Not where I wanted to put my money into.

No Problem! I feel your pain, my wife decided to see which was harder the right rear fender of the truck or the fence post along our driveway! So I have a "date" with the paintless dent removal guy on Friday hoping he can work some magic and that I can polish out the scratches to avoid a costly body shop bill!

ouch!!!! I would suck it up if it was just a cosmetic issue, but the fact that it is now sticking out, I think I need to do something about it. I am leaving work early today to see if I can get an estimate on the cost. It sounds like it might only be a hundred dollars more if I order the 4 piece pre-painted set from i think it is "Sparks Toyota" I can't remember the website. I have saved on my home computer. I would have 3 left over Fender flares, and it would cost more, but you never know if I will ever run into the same boat you did and mess up the rear Fender flare. No I am not a bad driver, and this is the first time I have ever hit anything with my vehicle in about 9 years. The last time was when I hit a parked car at church with my 98 Dodge Dakota....that was a sad day. I am thinking that it can't hurt to have the spare Fender flares just in case, and it would be cheaper if I ever had to get one replaced again. With my luck it would end up being the same one.

I already posted this on one of the other threads, but thought I would post it here too.

Quick update::: So now I remember why I baught a Toyota. Thought I was going to have to drop a few bones in labor and parts to get my Fender Flare fixed. Took it to the dealership, the body part mechanic looked at it and said I think we can fix that. 30 mins later he comes back, and it looks as good as new. I thanked him....must have been at least 5 times and then asked what I owed him. His response "Don't worry about it. Just remember us when you really need us." My response "Hopefully never but I know where to go. I am so happy, and it is things like that that make me very happy I baught a Toyota. They could have easily charged me for a new fender flare and to have it put on, but they did the right thing and tried to give me a fix. Great job Toyota.

Update. Ok so I know I was looking at getting a CAI over a year ago, but I decided not to at the time. I finally broke down and decided to try the Volant. I was going to do it myself, but the fine people at the Toyota dealership around here installed it for me. They did a real good job, but my only concern was that they didn't use the added foam seal for the fender wall. They said that they were worried about it getting sucked into the filter??? I wasn't quite sure what they meant, but I assume they know more about it then I do. So there is still that little gap between the fender wall. Anyone else have their's installed with out the foam piece. Also if someone has a picture of theirs installed with the foam piece, I would love to see a picture to understand more on what it should look like. Thanks for everyones help.

As for how it is, I like it so far. It may sound stupid, but it sounds quieter. What you might say.....quiter? Well I have the borla dual exhaust, and it has an anoying drone at 65 mph. Well the Volant seems to give it a deeper tone for some reason. It make the drone less annoying. Maybe it is because of the gap there isn't as much air flowing, or maybe it just changed the tone, and it a lot more pleasing. As for performance....not much difference, just sound, but it has only been on a day.

I have a flowmaster dual exhaust, and the new Volant that I recently put on changed the sound of my exhaust too, sounds deeper now.http://api.ning.com/files/LxYXQZhOCm...2*MkdHJ/28.JPG
