Don't kid yourself. They are slashing prices just like everybody else. Toyota is not somehow immune to the bleeding that the whole industry is feeling. Small cars equal small profits for carmakers. They make the most off of Trucks, SUVs and Luxury models.
It is also not true that other dealers are losing their butts either. It's easy in here among the brand name loyalists to believe that they are all dying... not true. I have a friend that owns a successful Chevy store. Last month they sold 273 new cars, trucks, and SUVs. Year ago figures were over 320 for the same month. That is off but not exactly dead like the media would like you to believe. Their mix was less truck heavy than years prior though...For sure.
The Toyota store several doors away also did well (but I don't know the actual figures). The lot that was once many types of vehicles is now about 50% Tundras, Sequoias, and SUVs. It looks a lot like the Chevy lot.
This problem of not selling large vehicles is pretty much the same for everybody. If fuel prices continue to drop, people will get amnesia and buy them again. Many people that are able to afford it are buying them now.
You have to realize that all makes have their loyal fans... EVEN DODGE!
