07 5.7 engine smoke

Ok really bummed. I noticed a couple of times during the 1+ year that I have owned the truck that upon startup the truck smokes (blueish). Today it did it twice. Once after sitting for 3hrs it smoked big time. The second time it did it after 1.5hrs of sitting. Didn't smoke as bad but still bad enough. It does not smoke while driving and no noticable loss of power. The trk only has 12,000 miles and I have been using amzoil since the last oil change.

Anyone else have this problem?? I guess I take it in tomorrow.

Does the smoke occur after short trips?

1st trip yesterday was 15 miles or so. 2nd trip was 3miles. It did not do it this am after sitting all night and i just drove it another 18 miles and stopped for an hour and it did not do it upon restart. It has done it once or twice before in the morning after sitting all night. I ran it hard a couple of times on the highway today and no smoke.

I am now carrying my digital camera and I am starting it from the passenger side so if it does it again I can take pictures. I was going to take it in if it did it again today. I think I will wait a while and see if I can get some pictures of it.

No check engine light. And this is blue smoke. Drove it for a while and parked it for 2hrs and started it up and I got a small amount of blue smoke. Not enough to come out on the camera. Just dropped it off at Toyota.

update: The dealer could not replicate the smoke. In speaking with a couple of knowledgeable people the issue has to be a valve guide or valve stem seal. Both of these are going to be difficult to prove on truck with intermittant smoke. Any suggestions on how to document the issue so that the issue can be rectified??

While typing this the service rep called and said they talked to the their tech line and said that they have seen cases of the pvc valve sticking and pulling oil into the intake. So we shall see.

Those were the 3 things I was going to say it could be. If you have a digital camera that can shoot video, that would be the best way to catch the blue smoke. Otherwise, you can put a catch can inline with the pvc valve to catch any and all oil that is going through the line.

Update:

Engine smoked twice last sunday. Took to the dealer and changed the pvc valve. Now this part sucks

You have to pull the intake manifold to change the pvc valve! How dumb is that!!!!!!!!!!

No smoke for a week so far but it usually takes a bit more time to develop.

Mine blows the same blue puff every once in a while. There is really no pattern to it either. could be twice in one day or not for a week. Ill be bringing this to the attention of the dealer at the next oil change.

I have not had another incident of blue smoke since they changed the pvc valve. I check every time I start it but so far so good. I am not usually an optimistic person but I am keeping my fingers crossed!!! Have them check with toyota tech support. If you have an issue let me know and I will put you in touch with the service writer who handled my truck. Good luck

Mike
