how to remove tailgate??

Has anyone removed the tailgate before? There's this weird screw that I can't loosen with either screwdriver or flathead. What do I use?

Remove the cables and open the tailgate halfway and pull the right side out and the tailgate comes right off.

There is actually a good diagram in the owners manual, page 37. Heres some pics of mine: (My BedRug prevents me from actually taking the gate off)

All you really do is push the safety clip out and the cables come off real easy....just hang on to the tailgate though!!!

^^No problem. I liked my old Tacoma (04) the tailgate was bolted on. As for the current Tundra, locking the tailgate is advised, they cost a fortune to replace.....and they are pretty flimsy!

yea, I advise not to drive with the tailgate down. with the horrific bed bounce we have, mine popped off when I did drive it with it down.
