5th wheel towing with Tundra

Does anyone have any real-world experience towing with their Tundra? I'm looking at towing a 28' 5th wheel with a GVWR of 10,300 lbs. I'm just curious to see how my 5.7L 2007 Tundra will handle it, how will it hold up? What is the GVWR of my '07, 10,800 lbs?

Do you have a double cab, or crew max? 2wd or 4wd? These things affect GVWR. Do you have rear air bags? Upgraded tires? Those are the two things most people say are necessary for the Tundra to be able to handle quite a bit more than is advertised.

Double cab, 4WD, factory P275/70R18 tires, no air bags. I know the tires are a must to upgrade and I'm looking at airbags as well. But it CAN be done right?

Absolutely. Things to add to your list for safely towing that weight: brake controller, upgraded tires, and rear air bags.

I have a reg cab standard 6 1/2 ft bed and I tow a 29', 8000lb 5th wheel with a GVW of 10000lbs. I have over 26,000 miles on my 2008 Tundra and love every minute of it. Most of these miles are tow and a lot in the mountains.

The 10,800 lb GVRW for the Tundra is I believe only for the 2WD Reg cab Std bed like I have. This is the most tow truck for the buck and the most fun for two people.

Weigh your 5th wheel and it probablly will not be 10000 lbs. Check the hitch weight as mine is about 1550lbs and with a 200lb hitch, cargo box with tools, I still had plenty of reserve payload. No overloads needed.

I have taken my hitch out and with a cargo box still in the back, I got a load of topsoil which was mostly located to the rear and still did not bottom out while driving. On the scale the truck weight was 7680lbs and the soil weight was 2180lbs. Also two of us in the cab. So the Tundra has what it takes in the stock form. Tires were aired up to 35lbs in the rear, which is what I use when towing.

I even have pictures, if only I could figure out how to post them,

Good Luck

I just purchased a 30 foot 5th, weight of about 9,500 lbs. I added "Super Springs" (by myself) and expect it to do well. It appears that the springs are the only place that may use the 'help' in the equation. The Super Springs stopped the "bed-hop" that the Trunda had as well...

your overloaded. Toyota just reduced the max cap. I want a 5th wheel bad but does not make good sense to overload or max out your truck. Even though people do it. Just saying.
