In 2007 I bought a 4.7litre Tundra and was pulling a large tent trailer and all the camping stuff that goes along with it. It ran fine and it was great. There were no issues. This summer I bumped up to a 21 foot trailer that weighs just shy of 5000lb and all the towing stuff that goes with it. It tows OK but does poorly on hills and the gas mileage is horrendous. I'm thinking of moving up to the 5.7litre Tundra. Will it make that much of a difference. The numbers say so but I'm looking for your experiences.
If you're towing anything with any real weight or mass (size) then go w/ the 5.7- The smaller engines will work so hard pulling, your gas mileage will plummet. The difference in non-towing mileage is insignificant. IMO

If towing, get the larger engine. I just bought a 2010 Tundra 4.6L thinking I wouldnt ever be towing much. Well, my 87 Land Cruiser broke down 250 miles away. I brought the Land Cruiser (4400lbs) back on a uhaul trailer (2200 lbs) and had a reall bad time. The Tundra shifted itself to death on I95 in Maine whcih has very slight rolling hills and I got 10mpg. BTW I only get 15mpg nursingit on highways. My Tundra cant get out of its way even without towing. Really likes to downshift for the seemingly slightest rises. I dont get it, 310hp?

That might be the transmission still 'learning' how you drive. Give it a little time. Also, and I'm not sure how you're driving, but I've found that if I raise my speed about 5mph my Tundra doesn't downshift quite so much with the smaller hills.

The 310 hp is not nearly as important as the torque rating. The 4.6 is down about 70 foot pounds of torque. That is pretty significant.
Just bought a new DC SR5. Since we will be upgrading from hauling a 4000 lb. Coleman Niagara pop-up to a 6500+ lb. 26-28 foot hardside travel trailer soon, I took the advise of the "towing expert" at the travel dealer and got the 5.7 engine. As he said so well, "The 4.6 will haul it, but the 5.7 will never know it has something it has to haul." Enuf said.

Very accurate. And with the gas mileage difference (which there is none), there's really no reason to not get the 5.7.
supercharge that 4.6 can be a great option!
getting a 5.7 you gonna need to do your maths!
if numbers are not important get a 5.7 & turbocharge that beast!
