2010 Tundra & USB Port

I have a 2010 Tundra with the 4.6L and the Satellite enabled radio. I have been looking around the web for reliable information on the USB port capabilities. More specifically I wanted to know what Ipods were compatible with it.

The owners manual actually doesn't say anything about being able to plug in an Ipod but my wife and I were on a trip in the truck a few weeks ago and she decided to try her Ipod on the USB port. Its a 2nd Gen Itouch 16GB with the latest 3.1 software. I had previously tried two other generations of Ipod and both reported IPOD ERROR no matter what I tried.
Much to my surprise my wife's Itouch worked like a charm. Full functionality.

After I found out the Itouch worked I contacted Toyota to see if they could provide a list of Ipods and generations that are compatible. About all I have received so far is the run around from them and today I finally got frustrated and we bought a 2nd Itouch. I was a little concerned because its the 3rd generation Itouch so there was no guarantees it was going to work.

Today I can confirm that the 2nd and 3rd Generation Itouch both work on this head unit. I have full control over the Ipod and in trying to decide what to do about the cable and where to put the Ipod for daily use I came across another interesting find that I wanted to share.

I learned that the Cup Holders pop out and there is a low profile tray underneath that you can use to store your music player. Pictures included below:

Just a follow-up to this one. I have found that if the Touch is low on power it sometimes has trouble connecting to the deck. The Deck will flash Ipod Error and the Touch will say something about the device not being supported. I have connected to the deck several times successfully so I do know it works.

Another thing I have noted is that if you leave the Touch connected for any length of time it will go to sleep and does not wake up when you start the truck back up. You need to dis-connect and re-connect the cable to the USB port. I'm not sure if there are some settings in my Touch to get around that issue.

It an annoyance but still nice to be able to connect the Ipod especially for longer trips and the little storage area gets the Touch and the cable out of the way.

Great info, thanks for sharing. I don't have the '10 Tundra, so I'll have to keep making do with hooking up a stereo cable to the aux input.

Out of curiosity, isn't the cup holder pinching the cable with how you have it running? I'd be concerned that after a while it would damage the wires inside and no longer work.

It does pinch the cable a little to run it the way I have shown. You are likely right that in the long run it might damage the wires.

Alternatively you can run it up along the side and come out along the edge of the plastic strip plate but it does cause the plate to be bump up a little where the cable comes thru. You can't do that too close to the latch end otherwise the plate won't latch. I think eventually I will put a notch in the plate for the cable to come thru as my permanent solution. I just stumbled onto this accessory area and I wanted to share.

Sadly I have not been able to use it very much lately. The weather has turned cold here and leaving the Touch in the truck full time is not an option. Once summer hits again it will be in my vehicle full time.

Try it. Your phone came with a USB cable (it's how you hook your phone to your computer). If it doesn't work, just get a standard stereo audio cable and run it from the headphone jack of the iPhone to the auxiliary input jack on the head unit.

As far as I know the IPhone and the 3rd Gen Itouch use the same software if you can test it for us then we will know. If you guys want I can snap a few pics of what it looks like when you get a successful connection established to the deck.

You should also be able to use Bluetooth to stream as well as using the mini stereo jack.

I haven't been leaving my Touch in my truck nor using it because the weather has been too cold.
