I own a DC Tacoma and it does have decent power and comfort.
Sometimes I complain about the mpg I get, which is 17, 19 on a lucky day if I drive under 70 mph.
Its funny because I use 89 octane or premium to get 18 mpg....It never did 22 on highway as advertised, and I wasn't loaded with cargo on most of my only highway trips, just one passenger. SOooo with cargo and more passengers it would maybe do 15 or 16 if I don't go over 70 mph.
ALSO, when I checked for the TUNDRA mpg, it says 16 city to 21 hwy. With a combined of 19 mpg.
That sounds really much better than my Tacoma DC 2wd. But some of you guys say you get an average of 14 mpg ????Thats a bigger difference, if its really what you'll get from the 5.7. Even with all the pros like size and towing. It basically means that I will have to stop for gas about 30 miles before a Tacoma.
Do you guys drive at around 65 mph and still get 14 mpg on the highway?? I know its about 1200 lbs heavier than a DC Tacoma.
A lot of people in the CA always look for Bigger, do it all 4x4 V8s, and then lift them, install huge tires, put many lights and heavy duty bumpers, and then just drive them to the mall......
Whats the use in that???? There is not even bad weather in CA compared to many other states......
Maybe when you need to buy a newer huge screen tv for the 6th time....when the store delivers for free..... if you ask then they will say "because I can afford it, thats why..."
The only thing that I really like about the Tundra over the Tacoma, considering you can't really compare them because one is a Mid-size and the other is a Full-size, is that the styling of the 07 Tundra is very much better than the 05+Tacomas, you can tell they paid more money to the designer that developed the Tundra.
I have a 08 Tundra crewmax 2x2, and as long as I'm not hot rodding around, take off slow, brake slow, I get around 17.5 mpg. We drove the thing to Florida last summer, it got around 21 mpg down, and around 20 mpg on the way back with two adults, three kids and the bed loaded with luggage. Now if I've got a lead foot, and I'm chewing up some Chevy's or Fords, I get around 14 mpg or worse. I had a 06 Tacoma DC 4x4, and it got around 18.5 mpg daily driving, about 21 on the highway.

Thats what I cannot understand....I have a Tundra with 5.7...I thought thre Tacoma would get much better gas mileage because of the size and the motor...But the dealer told me they get real close to the same gas mileage...Thats nuts!!

Did you get 18.5 mpg by driving speed limits only?
I drive according to the traffic, mostly here in Riverside county CA, everyone drives about 10 mph faster than limit and it doesn't even seem like we are racing around, just normal around here.
Do you keep your revs around 2000? and what kind of gas did you use on your TAcoma?
I've got 19 max. and that's mostly with freeway driving, at 70 to 75 mph.
That's also what I had been told, if you check on the specs of the 3 engine options for the Tundra, it performs better with the 5.7 also, but thats considering the amount of effort to move those 4900 lbs or more.
Tacoma is about 3900 lbs to 4100 in a 4x4 DC.
I also thought an extended cab tacoma would be lighter and have better mpg but I can't find better numbers on it anywhere.
I also thought there might be something wrong with my truck because it never did over 19mpg, I've owned it for 2.5 years, bought used.
Some people replied saying they had 25 mpg and higher but then they don't realize we are talking about Automatic Double Cab V6 ! engine mpg's.....

Reason: Some errors in spelling
I had an 06 Tacoma DC long bed and never got better than 17-18 mpg with it. I got rid of it and got an 08 Tundra Crewmax 5.7 and LOVE this truck absolutely worth every penny.

Yeah, I drove it the speed limit and kept the rpm around 2000. I also put 93 octane fuel in the thing the whole time I had it, not because I wanted to, but because I didn't know any better. When I got the Tundra I was enlightened to the fact that they are all made to run on 87 octane.
Yesterday, I traded my 2007 Tacoma PreRunner 4.0L V6 Auto (2 whl drive) for a 2007 Tundra SR5 5.7L V8 (4x4).
I kept METICULOUS records of my mileage, fuel (MPG) because I'm a dork and wanted to estimate the cost of upgrading to the 5.7. I've averaged 19mpg since July in the Tacoma. Mostly HWY - but some City too.
I will track my $$$, gallons, and MPG for the next several months and gladly post my Tundra numbers for those who are interested.
I'll update my signature block as soon as it's nice enough outside to shoot photos....
I'm really liking the power and roomy interior of the Tundra compared to my Tacoma. It seems much smoother ride at 70mph than the Taco (which got pushed around by the wind a little)...
I know the new 5.7L V8 is devouring gas compared to my old 4.0L V6... I'm curious to see just how drastic the difference is... I'll post my numbers soon.
I'll thrown in my 2 cents here. I have an '05 Tacoma access cab, v6, 4x4, 6sp manual. I drive about 55 miles to work one way and about 5 of those are city driving and the rest is all interstate. I average about 16.5mpg. I have been seriously looking at the 4x2 Tundra CrewMax with the 5.7, but I was concerned that the gas mileage would be much worse than my Tacoma, but after reading this thread, it doesn't seem like it the mpg will be worse, and it may actually be better than my tacoma.
OK - here's the deal... These numbers are my first MPG, I've only owned the Tundra a short 2 weeks (and the first tank was "free" from the dealership - so I have no idea how well they "filled" it)...
Here goes:
First tank (dealership): 14.1 MPG mostly HWY driving, but I romped on the 5.7 a few times just to "get a feel for the power..."
Second tank: 14.9 MPG, again mostly HWY and driving it a little more sensibly now.
Third tank: ??? (I'll keep y'all posted).
So my Tacoma MPG was in the 18's - the Tundra so far in the 14's.
*Also - my 5.7L (4x4) Tundra has a MagnaFlow dual exhaust on it (installed by the first owner?). So the power is amazing. I thought the aftermarket exhaust was supposed to improve mileage - but maybe not...

More to follow.
That'll increase as the truck learns your driving habits and you quit enjoying the power of the 5.7 - I know, I know, it's hard to do. You'll at least be into the mid-15's (probably higher) if you're doing mostly highway, assuming no lift/tires.
