Aftermarket Sunroof?

Anyone installed an aftermarket sunroof? If so, opinions, photos, model, etc?

Don't do an aftermarket...too many horror stories from bad installs.

But if you do, don't say you weren't warned!

Amen

Case in point....

I have a 2007 DC SR5. It has a sunroof (Toyota OEM). I didn't know it when I test drove it last year - but it was a dealership add-on (not built from the factory). As a matter of fact - you can't even get a DoubleCab with a sunroof from the factory. The original owner must have insisted on it - so it was added at the dealership.

You'd think that Toyota OEM Parts installed by Toyota Techs at a dealership would be a good thing, right??? Wrong.!

I love my Tundra - but I wish every day the damn sunroof wasn't there. It has already blown all my fuses once (had to take it back to the dealership - they kept it for a week to troubleshoot). That's when I found out it is considered an "accessory" not covered under my extended warranty. They squared it away for free ('cause I had just bought it from them). But still it acts flaky (opens by itself [just a crack], I hafta' close it almost every day is seems).

I think the original owner probably traded it back in 'cause he hated the sunroof and regretted putting it in... If I had known about the whole thing before buying - I would have looked for different truck. But, when you get in and sit down, it looks "100% stock" I had no idea it wasn't.

My advice is stay away...

Only go OEM, I was told by an old Toyota tech, that Toyota's design sunroofs had a water drain built into them just incase someday they would leak,,,,, the water would go into the channel & down thru a hose & out by a door hindge, sometimes those hoses would get plugged & back up & then they would leak. DON'T DO IT, I REPEAT DON'T DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!! ONLY OEM!!! I DON'T EVEN CARE WHAT MANUFACTURE, TOYOTA, HONDA, NISSAN, FORD, ET. ONLY OEM!!!

I cringe every time that we send one out to get one put in. I know that someday it will com back and I have to wonder if A) the part will be available B) if the company who installed them will be in business.

Sorry to be so blunt, but I have seen way to many horror stories to ever consider anything less than an OEM one. I had one on my old 86 CRX and it leaked three years after it was installed. couldn't find a replacement, company went under, etc. Worse thing I ever did.

Toyota's do have tubes for draining, and if they get clogged at least you can access them and clean them or replace them. I have not seen that happen yet though.

Sounds like a terrible idea. Even if they offer a lifetime warranty, it would still be a nightmare taking it in to them every couple of months to track down another leak and leave you without a vehicle for a few days.
