All I've got to say is that whoever decided on the oil system for the tundra is a freaking idiot!!!! Attempting to change the oil filter takes an act of God. So far I have yet to find an oil filter wrench to fit the damn thing, even though they say 65mm. Apparently they fired the awesome guy that created the system for the Tacoma, guess he made it to easy. So it looks like my truck will get new oil, but no filter this go around. Just venting.
Yeah, you need to get the metal 65mm socket for the job. The plastic 65/67mm socket doesn't work. It doesn't allow enough of the socket to get on the filter cap and you can strip it. It's not too bad once you've done it a couple times.
Thanks for feeling my pain, had to vent. Where might one get a metal oil filter wrench? Seems every where I go all they have is plastic. So Toyota did this for the environment? I guess I can see that I suppose, personally I believe they figured people wouldn't want to take the time to go through the hassle and would just take it to the dealership.

My dealership will order them in, or the Matco tool guy that comes in has them too. Runs about $15. I know they're a major PITA, especially when taking off the skid plate.

The wrench you are looking for is an Assenmacher Toy640. It is the tool used at the dealership and sold off the Snap-on truck. Google it and you can find multiple on-line sellers (I got mine from Amazon) for about $15. It fits like a glove and works perfect.
Im a mechanic and we have a special socket for them. at least the toyota ones are under the truck, BMW and Mercedes have been putting them under the hood for years and if you unscrew it too fast you have a real mess on your hands!!!
When you get it off, just seat it down enough till it stops, dont go crazy tight on it, if the gasket is in where its supposed to be then you wont have any leaks!
we have had to replace a housing off an FJ cruiser because the toyota lube tech over tightened it.
