I have a friend with a 2011 Tundra SR5 5.7L 6spd auto who is experiencing an intermittent random slip/slam in the tranny. I use the term slip/slam because I can't think of a better term. :-) Occasionally after slowing or stopped, then applying throttle, the transmission will briefly freewheel, then abrubptly engage a gear. He says it is a hard enough engagement it snaps your head back into the headrest. It is a very harsh engagement. It occurs randomly and intermittently. It began around 6k miles and has continued more times than he can count up to the 14k miles now on the truck. It can happen cold pulling out of his neighborhood, or warm after driving 100 miles. It happens from a stop or up to ~25mph, say when approaching a red light that turns green before completing the stop. It always catches him by surprise, when he gets off the brake and gives it some throttle, expecting the truck to accelerate, instead it briefly revs, then snatches into gear.
The dealer was unable to duplicate the problem.
Anyone have suggestions what might be the problem? Most of the time the tranny shifts flawlessly. I rode around town with him for 60 miles and never experienced so much as a hiccup. He says when it does happen you almost get whiplash. Passengers look at you like you're crazy. Loose items bounce around in the glovebox. Other drivers think you want to drag race. Any TSBs on this transmission?
This is a safety issue. When it happens the truck surges forward unexpectedly.

PS. Is the search function on this forum broken?
Dealer incompetence. Bring it back and/or to another dealer. If it still does it, bring it back again. Keep bringing it back and leave it with them until they fix it. If you keep bringing it back and they can't fix it, then look into lemon laws and make them replace it. Not acceptable for it to be like that.
He's trying to accelerate just as the truck is trying to downshift to first gear. Or, he's giving the truck too much throttle while at a point where either first gear or second gear would work, and the truck thinks he should be in first gear for acceleration, so while downshifting to 1st the engine is revving up and then when 1st gear is engaged he is feeling something akin to dropping the clutch in a manual. If he would transition to acceleration a little slower/more smoothly when already decelerating at <8mph it wouldn't happen.

I disagree. This guy has been driving for 45 years and never had this kind of problem. He babies his cars. He has owned and driven a _lot_ of cars, from Priuses to Corvettes. Sometimes it happens while rolling, sometimes after coming to a complete stop. This is definitely a tranny problem, not an operator error.
I've read of others having a similar issue with _this_ truck/transmission.
I am having he same issue with my truck but mine has almost 80,000 miles on it and I am a little concerned about this issue but not sure what to do about it as my warranty has long expired. I was debating on purchasing an extended warranty as I know it will not get any better or trading it in for another truck. Not sure what to do. My truck is a 2002. Suggestions?

If you can get an extended factory warranty, go for it. Find a dealer that will give a discount though. it wouldn't surprise me if you can get 50% off.
My 08 Tundra does the same thing and I've been told numerous times that it is normal and a product of the fly by wire throttle. It may very well be, but I also believe it can be fixed. My bet is that the trans ECM is trying to decide if it should shift to 1st or second. I can make mine do it at will just by slowing below 10 mph but more than 5 mph and then stepping on the throttle. the engine revs to about 2000 rpm and the trans shifts to 1st for a very short time and then to 2nd. This is very annoying when turning onto a street that has a dip or curb transition that requires slowing to less than 10 mph. I also believe it to be a safety issue when trying to clear the intersection after slowing for a stop light and then it changes to green before your speed goes below 5 mph My question is, why can't the software engineers change the parameters in the trans ECM that will make the trans shift directly to 2nd if the speed is less than 10 mph but more than 5 mph. I also have a friend with a later model Tacoma that has the same issue.
Try driving 20mph and apply brakes hard but dont lock up tires. when your truck stops immediately apply the gas. Does it rev high then engage? I had a 2007 5.7 double cab that had the "rumble strip" transmission problem Toyota replaced the trans and torque converter. It started doing the rev and engage hard problem. Turned out to be the torque converter. They replaced it with what they said was a "revised" converter. No problems since.
Hello to all................. try to add about 1.5 to 2qt of trans fluid and then road test the vehicle again for about 75-90 miles.
Keep us posted if it fixes the truck.......
I had what I would call a transmission slip which occured from time to time on my 09 Tacoma. Found out it was computer related. Dealer had info in Tech manual about the problem and a software update took care of it.
