4.6L Oil and filter change?

Current truck is a 4.7L 2004 Tacoma Access cab 4x4 w/ 50000 miles. Am thinking about future trade to similar new truck w/4.6L or a new Tacoma access cab or dbl cab 4x4. Oil change on Tacomas with either 2.7L or 4.0L seem pretty easy. Can anyone tell me about the 4.6 Tundra? Is it the same as the 5.7L? Saw the DIY: oil change w/pics 5.7L posted by mhadden. The filter on the 5.7L is the same diameter as our 2010 Prius(64mm cap). The Prius filter lays on it side, cap comes off the end. From the pics it looks like the filter cap on the 5.7L comes off the bottom? Any oil remaining in the filter would go straight down your arm if you didn't plan ahead? Are there other issues I should know about? I have had Toyotas in the family for 35yrs,and know that they aren't perfect, some have been very close.
Thanks
Tom

You are braver than I am. Toyota service here always is a problem. No Toyota care for me!

I have an 07 small V8 Tundra and the oil change is easy, once you take the skid plate off. And I leave mine off. Spin on filter and 0 weight oil. Takes about 20 minutes.

The current V8 and V6 Tundras and the V6 in the 4Runner and FJ have the canister rather than the spin-off filter. On all off my Tacomas and Tundra with the spin off filters I was able to change them without removing the skid-plate. Has anyone found a way to change the canister type filters with the skid-plate in place? Could perhaps an access hole be cut in the proper spot in the skid-plate? Maybe someone has done this an can share! Add an oil pan drain valve and problem solved.

I have the 4.6L TRD Tundra and changing the oil is a task because you have to remove the skid plate. You also need the wrench to fit the filter cap. Some after market filters have a screw in drain plug that's a little cleaner to use than Toyotas push in plug.
