Get down close, look and feel it. See if your fingernail "hangs up" on it. Could be paint chips from road debris.

Some road debris is inevitable, but it's a good idea to not follow close behind a dump truck or any rig that hauls gravel or dirt.

The paint on our newer Toyotas is softer than it should be, because it doesn't have many of the chemicals in it that paint used to have. Stupid tree huggers.
