Adding remote start/keyless/alarm to factory HL

I'm new to the forum and did some searching but haven't found exactly what I'm looking for. I have a 2008 HL base v6 and I'm looking for a remote start for it. I've heard bad things about the OEM VIP remote start and want to stay clear of it but don't want to carry 2 remotes. Can I buy a new alarm with keyless and remote start from python or code alarm etc and wire the keyless option into the factory keyless? Basically not use the keyless in the new system but use the new remote to activate the original keyless? Or what other options are out there? Or do you typically just wire in the whole new system and not use the OEM keyless any longer? Thanks for the info ahead of time!- Shawn

I have a Viper 5501 remote start system on my '10. It basically works on top of the factory system. Unlocking via the alarm keyfob disarms the alarm and unlocks the door (just as you would with the factory keyfob). I've heard of people removing the wiring for the factory keyless but apparently it's not something easy to do nor is totally reliable.

+1 for Viper, except I have the alarm combo...the 5901. But, I don't have push button start on my Sport. Actually one of the many reasons I did not go for the Limited was not wanting to have to carry two key fobs around, which you will have to do if you have the push button start....aftermarket, as least as far as I know, has not come out with a solution to replace the factory keyfob proximity technology (which allows the car to start when the push button is pressed).

I can't speak to the factory start, but the 5901 is rated at almost a mile with direct line of sight...and I have started mine pretty close to that distance. Most after market auto starts now come with amazing distance. Although you may think you don't need the distance capability, it also means better reach through walls when in a store, mall or building. The two-way of this remote is a bonus because it confirms whether your command reached the vehicle or not.

viper 5901?

Thanks for the info everyone. I think I've decided to go with a remote start/alarm/ and keyless aftermarket system and I'm thinking it'll be the viper 5901. Luck123, did you install it? What bypass modules do I need for the starter and door locks? Any help is appreciated ahead of time!

No, I had it professionally installed, and unless u really understand the cars electronics, I would recommend against doing this on your own. Also, certain program options require a special tool from Viper if I recall correctly. I did not want to risk something going wrong and being stuck because my HL would't start. Yes, I did need a module for the chip in the key. It's been 2 yrs so I don't remember the particular brand. Nothing required for the locks or rear trunk...the 5901 has this integrated.

Cheers.

That's awesome!! I did not know that this exists......I won't have to avoid a push button start on my next vehicle.

Actually, now that I see it, Xpress is the brand I used for the chip in key bypass module for my Viper.

Cheers.
