I just picked up my new company car, a 2012 Highlander. I also bough my former company car, a 2010 Highlander. I hate the 2010 radio, short display of satellite radio info. The 2012 unit is much nicer and the Bluetooth is nice too. Is it possible to buy a 2011-12 unit to install in my 2010? I have XM already installed and it is a non-JBL unit. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks to all who posted, both of my vehicles have interior LEDs as well as a real "beep-beep" horn. The Weather tech liners are great too.
Very interested in this as well. Unfortunately we would need to buy the headunit from the dealer and will need to pay exorbitant prices.
For bluetooth you would need to buy a separate module for the headunit and you will have to wire the mic.

If I can get a replacement headunit...will I be able to get full XM song info with the 2011-12 unit? I guess I can take out my 2012's radio and compare the wiring in the back. Was trying to avoid that if possible.Bluetooth would be nice, but secondary for me.
Anyone else looked at doing this? I have a 2008 HL and my dad has the 2012. I like the newer stereo much better. i also like the fact that he has the USB connection, not just the AUX jack.
I've found some of the newer radios on ebay, but most don't have the same specs as mine. I have the 6-CD Changer in mine, but the only ones with that on ebay say they are for the JBL system, which I don't have. The one's I have found without it are only single CD.
Also, I would like to get the USB connection.
Am I better off going to an aftermarket stereo to get all of this? Can I still use my steering wheel controls?
I don't think it will be plug and play. I have the wire diagram for the 2008-2010, but not the 2011+ (they should be mostly the same). But one of the members here (horent135) has recently informed me that apparently the 2011+ radio has a 5th connector not present on the 08-10. I don't know what that connector is used for. (EDIT: just thought of this, it could be for the new USB input, that would need 4 new wires into the headunit.) Apparently XM is built into units (it has an antenna jack) now so you won't need a tuner like on the 08-10's.
In terms of cost, aftermarket would be the best bet. You could probably get a 2011 OEM one to work, but you might have to get clever with the wiring (along with getting your hands on a 2011+ wire diagram for the radio). I'm not sure if they changed how the steering wheel controls work (I doubt it as other systems use it besides the radio), so maybe? but you can definitly get adapters for aftermarket headunits. If you see those adapters fit 08-2013 HL's, then I guess you can assume your 08 controls with work with the 2011+ headunit.

and on a random note, I had a 2 day subscription to TIS 3 days ago working on an old Lexus...I should of grabbed the wire diagram for the 2011 radio I'm an idiot
It is a direct swap for the 2012 unit in the 2010. The wiring harness is exactly the same.mi didn't add USB though. Just make sure to disconnect the XM antenna connector behind the head unit and plug it directly in the new unit.i did go from a 6 CD changer to a single, but the new hu was worth it. $50 on eBay and it was brand new.
Homer, so youhad no troubles swapping out the 2 of them? I don't have the XM on my current HU so I just have a regular XM radio that I connect through the AUX jack.
No trouble at all. The good news is, the 2012 hu has XM built in, so that's a plus for you. The eBay seller was out of Norwood, Mass. $50.00 and it was a new take - off unit. Steering wheel controls still work too

Hi,
Does your bluetooth works? I got the 2011 head unit, but in my 2010 I have an extra harness that doesn't go anywhere on 2011-12 HU. If I take that harness off from 2010 HU bluetooth steering control doesn't work either. I got the 2011 HU for bluetooth streaming mainly. Many thanks in advanced. First post, recently switched from a 04 M3 to 2010 Highlander Sport.
^ I think that is what Toyota had in mind. I think the OEM unit is a standard double din size. That way they could use it across all there models like they did.
I bought an 08 Limited about 6 months ago and i love it only thing i wish i had besides hid lights is the Bluetooth. my wife has a 2012 Camry and the music streaming and phone are awesome. I thought of going with a blulogic but it only streams thru the two front speakers. Sucks getting older if i had this truck 5-7 years ago Id have hybrid tail lights mdx hid projectors mdx lenses so much potential so little money lol.
