USA Want to add mechanical water temperture gauge

I would like to add a mechanical water temperature gauge on my 2012 HL 3.5 V-6. Does anyone know if there is a port on the engine that I can screw in the mechanical sensor to read the antifreeze temperature.

That's kind of an esoteric modification, and I don't know if any of the other owners will have an answer. What you could do is search the Introduction forum and use "tech" as your only search term, which should turn up at least three or four Toyota techs who have joined TN in the last few weeks. If anyone could provide an answer it would be a tech.

You could probably fabricate a dual headed fixture that screwed into existing oil pressure sender. One head for the oil sender and the other for his oil gauge.

The question is, why would you want to do this?

He's looking for coolant temperature, not oil pressure.

oops, that's for "remembering" the thread wrongly. In that case, short of drilling and tapping his own port, there's always something like this to read the ODBII temp:

A Scangauge will give you the temperature of the coolant, but it's not a mechanical gauge. Its a very useful tool and easy to install.

Could you tap the factory coolant temp sensor? I remember the kits that I looked at for my Integra used the factory temp sensor with an adapter to the mechanical sensor, you did have to purchase some additional fittings to get it to work perfectly. I was going with autometer as they are, from what i have seen one of the best, but also most $$$

I have a Garmin 1490T and Garmin's ecoRoute On-Board Diagnostics Bluetooth device that plugs into the engine information port. I bought it mainly because I wanted to get at the codes, clear them, if they should pop up while driving. This device also gives a display of 4 gauges, all of which can be changed for different info. One of these can be set to give you a real time display of engine temp.

There must be a number of drain plugs that one can tap into for a sensor. One easy way would be to use one of those external temperature gauges that Radio Shack sells and epoxy the sensor to the body of the coolant pump.. or any other part of the system you think would better reflect the temp you are after.

A Scangauge would be the easiest way. Just plug into the OBDII port and you are all set. The car computer also needs the coolant temp so the sensor is already present.

I was just going to mention a ScanGauge or an UltraGauge. Both of these things read info through the OBDII port. Just plug it in and you're good to go. You can personalize the gauges to your liking too, moreso for the UG though.

Wow, thanks for all the ideas. I never thought of using a gauge that plugs into the OBD II connector. That would be the fastest and easiest route to take. Time to research some of these gauges that were mentioned. Thanks again - I just love this forum.

Why not install something like this on the "return " line of your coolant system, and then you can mount the gauge inside the car and know exactly how hot your SUv is running at all times

http://www.ebay.com/itm/SMOKE-DIGITA...sories&vxp=mtr

I used to something similar on my race quads so that i knew when i was in the red zone of the engine temp.

Just received my BT1 from GoPoint, It is a OBD 2 wireless bluetooth that plugs into the OBD 2 port. Then I downloaded the app for my iphone and I can see all my engine data on my Iphone which includes the engine water temp. Thanks for all the information everyone has provided. The cost for the bluetooth adaptor is $59.99 + s&h and the app was free.

That looks like a pretty cool way to get the info. Are there any GPS units that could read the blue tooth data?
