I'm replacing the factory "Display Audio" head unit with a Kenwood DNX6990HD. The last challenge I'm facing is integrating the factory backup camera.
I've spent a lot of time reviewing the following thread, and made a voltage converter as outlined here: HOW TO: Using the factory rear view camera with aftermarket stereo. However, I don't have a reference as to the color/pin # of the wires that I need to splice for a 2013 Highlander.
I can t help with that info
As a last resort you can use aftermarket camera it will perform better
Mine is 170 degrees wide
Are you going to replace other audio components ?
Yes, door speakers, and a sub. I don't see where replacing the camera provides a lot of value for me; perhaps in the future that will change. My main concern today is to get the new head unit in, as I'm not happy with wires/antenna on the dash (SiriusXM), and I'd like to use in-dash NAV on a trip scheduled in a couple of weeks. If I can't figure out the backup camera in the next few days, I'll have to live without it until I return.
Has anyone replaced their 2013 head unit? I just checked, the width of the factory unit's faceplate is 7 13/16". Other than the skinny trim ring that came with the Kenwood DNX6990, I don't have anything that is going to bridge that gap (new HU is 7"). The kit that Crutchfield included is obviously for pre-2013 Highlanders.
Looks great; but really commits you to leaving the aftermarket radio in the car when you sell it. Plus you'd have to match/repaint the plastic. My plan is to install with a gap for now and wait for a kit, or fabricate a couple of plastic rectangles that I can hot glue to the fascia, then snap off when the kit arrives (or when I reinstall the factory H/U).
So crutchfield sent you the dash kit for the 08-12's? Can you just remove the 2013's outer "shell" so it leaves that large gap so the kit you got fits? I bet toyota is still using the same dash as the earlier years, so I bet the shell pops out like the older radio's.

The '13 and '12 dashes are similar, and likely have all the same dimensions, screw holes, etc; however, not similar enough that parts are interchangeable.
Stock H/U (note hazard button and pass airbag info where legacy knobs used to be):
Legacy bracket from Crutchfield:
Height/Width 4" x 7 13/16" vs 4" x 7":

I found another '13 owner (jsirboo) that has swapped his H/U, and he's got it installed with gaps on either side to the radio, patiently waiting for one of the kit manufacturers to make them.
Crutchfield doesn't have any answers right now (I forwarded them these photos earlier today), so I'll just install the new H/U with gaps for now...
I would pay extra to buy a brand new vehicle with standard din opening and power connector , standard size speakers.
so we don't have to go thru this every time you want to swap parts.
Likely will never happen!
The other TN member and '13 HL owner, jsirboo (http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/287558-jsirboo.html), also reminded me that I'll need an AM/FM antenna adapter. Crutchfield carries it (Metra 40-LX11 - Item# 12040LX11), and provides it free of charge when you purchase a head unit for a qualifying vehicle. I wasn't aware of the need (nor was Crutchfield), as it wasn't listed in the 'What fits my car" section. I contacted them, and they're sending one for free (I bought my H/U from them last week).
I was reading the reviews for your unit and it looks like you have to tap Agree every time you start the vehicle!
Wow ! this is the thing I hate the most. In my previous highlander I was able to buy a module to bypass that screen
I do like Garmin nav, I use it as an app with iphone 5

Are you referring to the Kenwood DNX6990, or Toyota factory NAV? My '13 HL doesn't have factory NAV, but my wife's Avalon does. It does prompt you to hit 'Agree' on each start, but only for the first few seconds. If you ignore, it goes right to the map.
My next car radio must have Air play !
And a nice hi definition screen ! smile
But,than again they will lock out video while moving!
this is not one of them, but still nice: http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/08/a...ora/#continued
