Wander if any owners already through with DIY oil change. I'll be doing mine within next month or two and found a write up for Avalon http://members.cox.net/n0v8or/avalon_oil_change.pdf
It has same engine as a HL so procedure should be similar. Would be nice to have oil change write up for HL or at list if someone would point on key differences with Avalon and snap few HL specific pictures.
Thank you for detailed info! Do you know if plastic filter drain adapter comes with a filter or needs to be purchased separately? Does it make sense to buy OEM filter element or any after market part will work as well, since filter element looks pretty basic comparing to old style filter. According to the pictures, looks like filter and drain plug easily accessible from the front of the vehicle and no ramps or lifting needed.

It comes with the Toyota cartridge kit. It also removes the o-ring from the drain opening when you remove the tool. Some engineer was thinking here
I have always used the OEM filter during the warranty period.
It is not necessary but avoids finger pointing down the road.
My dealer has a "buy three get one free" deal.
Jury is out on how many QuikLub service bays actually do the drain the cartridge housing bit(I would bet none of the do). The first time I did an oil change on my Camry I did it and followed the torque spec on the drain plug. The second time the bolt required more force than the canister and the canister keep coming loose so I just took the housing off and changed the plug o-ring after it was removed. There are two flat spots on the threaded end that allow you to put it in a vise to break the drain plug loose if needed.
I had to clean the housing after it was removed but it wasn't bad.

The dealer only wanted $4 for a genuine oil filter. No point in even visiting autoparts stores for other brands.
And, for various parts like filters, I don't see the need for genuine since magnusonmoss helps. Any dealer that'll argue with aftermarket parts during a warranty claim is one to avoid.
I'll use whatever is available cheaper. For now, wix/purolater/fram were more expensive locally.
BTW, I don't ever drain cartridges. Waste of time and a o-ring.
