No, the PIE unit does not have any switches on it. Once it is installed, you would never need to touch it again. On our vehicle, you change modes by pressing Preset 3 memory button on the nav. screen when you are using the Ipod. Preset 3 allows you to toggle between the two modes.

You just hit the "3" preset button on the radio to toggle back and forth between modes. Really easy.

sorry to bring up an old thread, but i was wondering if anyone's tried to do both the iPod interface and a satellite radio install? If I understand correctly, with the PIE unit you can retain the satellite function. From some of the research i've done, most Satellite kits come with a receiver, antenna and some kind of an interface that allows text to appear on the factory deck; with the PIE already doing this for the iPod, will you need an additional interface for satellite or can the PIE unit also do text for a satellite radio? And if both are installed, how do you change through the modes? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Make sure you get the harness also..he has the best price I found, and fast shipping.
I ordered one of these (got it from Andy at Anco). I have an ’06 Avalon Limited with JBL 6disc in-dash + Factory Nav. I know I’m not in the Avalon forum here, but I ended up in this thread b/c it was about iPod interfaces, and particularly the PIE.

My 8G Nano (3rd Gen) arrived Friday (12/14), so I installed the PIE that evening. It works...sort of...but not as described. Many 'bugs' and not much as far as an owners manual or trouble shooting, so I’m not sure where to start. I plan to call PIE tech support, but wanted to get some feedback from some of you that has this unit also.

When it plays, the sound is great, and it seems to work pretty well in manual mode with control from the iPod wheel. I'll attempt to list the issues I've seen and maybe someone can tell me if there is a fix for any of this.

1. The TEXT button function doesn't work. It pulls up the text box for a flash, but it is empty of data, and quickly disappears. Doc says it should toggle between artist, album, song title when pressed.
2. When I shut the car off and then come back, it does not resume play. The only way it will resume play is if I press the Preset 3 button to put it into Manual mode and then it starts playing where it left off.
3. The 'mode' box that shows SAT1 and then channel information stays on the screen constantly when in Advanced mode and it flashes back and forth between a few characters of the artists' name and then the song title and then the last half of the song title... constantly switching from one to the other and stays up all the time, erasing a 1” by 5” block of my Nav screen.
4. Sometimes FF and REW won't stop ... you have to switch the to Manual mode to stop it.
5. When you switch to manual mode, the box with the SAT1 channel info still shows the info (partial artist name and song title as mentioned above) for the last song you were playing.
6. the Up/Down arrows don’t work, on the stereo or on the steering wheel to go to Prev/Next track. Sometimes I can use Preset 1 and Preset 2 to do this, but other times those don’t respond at all.

There are other things & inconsistent behavior as well, but these were the ones I can remember now and the majors.

Any ideas? Could it not be fully compatible with the New Nanos? Could there be a firmware update for the PIE box itself that resolves these?

I've also seen most of these same issues with my installation of the PIE unit on my '08 HiHy with the JBL 6-Disc changer unit. PIE tech support wasn't much help other than to say that the interface hasn't been tested yet with this particular head unit. They did suggest that I return it and replace it with another one just in case it was a defective unit.

I have decided to return it and change to the new PA-20 Toy USA Spec iPod interface instead. It has all of the same features and I've had two of their interfaces in other vehicles and they worked well for me. I'm just waiting for it to ship as they're brand new and just slowly trickling out right now.

At least you know that you're not alone in your experience!

I plan on making a hole in the "carpet liner" that comes in the console so that you don't see this messy cutout when open. I tie-wrapped all of the excess cable right below the cupholder.

can you send me the pic? i cannot see it
