I picked up the cross rails and need to know also how to remove the roof rack leg cover without damaging it. the instuctions say to use a nylon removal tool but it's not included and no part number is given. Anyone know how to remove?

Still waiting for my cross rails to come.
Did you have any problems getting yours??
I was told by multiple dealers that it would be mid December until they would be able to ship them.
Might ask your dealer how to take them off. They may show some customer support and take them off for you free..it is almost Xmas after all.
I will post how I managed to get mine off when I receive the rails.

I got my crossbars from my local toyota dealer hamertoyota in So. CA.
you can also get them here. www.authentictoyota.com part#PT611-48070.
$168.75
I was easily able to get the end caps off after fabricating a 1/16" thick 1" wide piece of steel 6" long. I made a 45 degree bend 1" in from one end, This easily fits under the side of the end cap so that you can release the plastic tabs. The secret is to be on a ladder and push down on the end cap while spreading the outside edge with the tool. once the plastic tabs are release it comes off easily as shown in the instructions.

FWIW, today I received a Harbor Freight catalog (why I no idea - never ordered from them). They have two nylon tool sets. A 7-piece set for $4.99 on sale (item 95532-1RYH) and a 4-piece set for $2.99 on sale (item 95214-2RYH). The kicker is that shipping is $6.99. So if you need a cheap nylon tool set, here you go. Personally, I go with Summerwind and get a quality set from Eastwood

hey, just bought my highlander on 12/27/07 and they said if we wanted the cross bars it would be until Jan 24th, b/c they're on back order. we told the salesman that we wouldn't buy the suv unless he took a set off of another truck for us and had them installed. we paid $200 for the parts and install when we bought the car.... sort of a different outlook but thought i would throw my 2c in...
I just bought two 2008 Toyotas (Wilm, NC) and did not notice until after purchase that Highlander did not have cross bars.
I later purchased bars through dealership for $200 and went home to install. Thought this would be simple. After no luck getting caps removed, I drove to dealership. Told them I coud not figure out how to get caps off. Mechanic was on break and offered to get them off. He couldn't figure out how to get them off.
We went inside to one of the service coordinators. He told me I could schedule a visit and it would cost $40 to have them installed. I asked what he would charge just to take the caps off. Answer was $40. I said "no thanks". Not a good start to "service" experience.
I found this thread and the approach from TomM1 worked easily. Hate to admit I'd have never figured this one out myself. Thanks TomM1 !!
What is the purpose of selling a vehicle with a roof rack and no cross bars anyway ?

Btw, I would NOT recommend Hamer Toyota for the cross bars. Nothing but excuses from their parts department. After reading the post above, i called them and they said they would hold it until I can come later to purchase them. Well I stopped by after work and the person told me that the bars are out of stock. However he said that he could order them and it would be here in two days. I was pissed that whoever I spoke to had told me incorrect information, but I paid for the bars fully expecting them to be there in two days. Well two days later, I called and a parts representative told me that the bars were not there and it would not be there for another two to three weeks. I decided I would have to take a trip back to the dealer to get a refund since they screwed up two times now giving me wrong information. I went back 6 days later because of work schedule. I asked for a refund since they do not have the bars in stock and the person tells me they are going to charge me a 10% restocking fee. Now I'm really pissed. The nerve of them trying to charge me a restocking fee for something they do not even have in stock! I explain my situation calmly to David. He tells me he can get the bars here within 1 hour. I tell him that I will give him 2 hours and if the bars are not here, I will get a full refund with no fee. Fortunately for both their parts employees and myself, the bars were there when I came back. Did I get the part I wanted? Yes. Was it worth the hassle, and four trips to the dealer, being lied to on the phone? Definitely not. What it has resulted in is a big negative image of Hamer Toyota and their parts department staff and operations. The only positive thing that came out of this is a stellar employee, David in the parts department who did his best to make me happy.
The least they could do after all that was to offer to install the part on my car.

I just recently bought a 2008 Highlander Hybrid with the crossbars installed. Upon driving it on the interstate I am getting a lot of wind noise. When I inspected the bars I noticed an arrow on the bars, both facing towards the rear of the SUV. I also noticed that the crossbars are shaped like a wing, with a thick edge on one side and a narrow edge on the the other, in this case pointing towards the front of the SUV. Since you installed your own, can you tell me if my crossbars are installed backwards?
Thanks.
2008 Highlander Hybrid Limited Blizzard Pearl, everything but the DVD player
Go to the eigth page of posts and the is a croos bar posting with the pdf file for the crossbar instructions. Yes the bars are installed backwards the arrows face forward according to the directions on the pdf file.
hope this helps

Some of the previous posts are a great help with regard to removing the end caps. I just wanted to add a few things.
The "aggressive" clips are on the outside of the end caps. The less aggressive clips are on the inside. So, while removing the end caps pull out the inside first. Once the inside is released, there is less pressure on the outside clips making them easier to unseat without damage. I just used a screwdriver.
For reinstalling, again start with the inside and then seat the outside. Some firm strikes with the heal of my hand did the trick.
Do the cross bars only come in black? I was suprised to see black when I opened the box. The rest of the roof rack is gray/silver.
