I just re-read the SmartKey section of the owners manual.
I am probably the only slow learner here but I discovered that the liftgate does not lock after you open it. Even if you have locked the doors with the door handle touch pad.
Quote:
Lock the back door again when
you leave the vehicle. The back
door will not lock automatically
after it has been opened and then
closed.
You have to press the lock button to the right of where you open the liftgate to lock it again. The lock button will also lock all car doors when pressed.

When you lock the car and try to open the lift after opening it will open because you have the smart key on you. If you lock the car and put the smart key away, then go back and try to open the hatch it will not open. Problem = No Problem.

You are correct in what you said but that is not what the OP is about. The quote in my original OP comes from page 34 of the Owners Manual
The OP states the if you actually OPEN the hatch after you have locked the doors and close it and then put the smart key away, the hatch is still unlocked. (in my case ALL of the doors unlock and stay unlocked until I press the lock button on the hatch or the door handle lock button)
It is different from locking the doors and putting the smart key away and trying to open the hatch
So try the following and see if yours works differently then mine.
With the smart key in your hand, press the black lock button on the front door
Go to the back and open the hatch and close it
Go put the smart key away from the HL
Go back and check the status of the hatch and all of the doors.
On mine, the hatch is still unlocked and I have to press the lock button on the hatch to relock the doors.
It appears that once the doors are unlocked you do not need your SmartKey to open the hatch.
The gottcha here is that owners expect the hatch lock to reset to "Locked" if all of the doors were locked when you open it.
Doesn't seem that Toyota implemented the locking system that way

WOW I just did the same thing with a LTD on the lot and would have assume it would lock back up.

Would think it would be a good thing to point out when you and your other sales guys are doing the "walk around" when you sell a new HL with SmartKey to a new owner.
It is not apparent that this happens and you can leave your HL in a non-secure condition if you do a last minute open the hatch before you leave the HL.

We spent about hour playing with the smart key on the gas and hybrid. Monday I will making some calls. Maybe I missed something?
What do you mean by "put the smart key away"? I initially thought the smart key would be something I might be interested in when I replace my 2001 HL but the more I read the more I'm thinking that my current "dumb key" is the way to go. At least when I leave my car I know my doors are locked. :-)

Haven't heard if akira751 learned anything additional on SmartKey and the rear hatch operation but...
The "put the smart key away" comment was focused on proving what is in the owners manual is fact..If you lock your HL using the buttons on the front door handles and then open the rear hatch you need to relock the doors by using the lock button on the rear hatch.
The point of the post was that unless your sales person pointed this fact out or you are data compulsive and ACTUALLY READ YOUR OWNERS MANUAL (page 34) you would not be aware that opening the hatch after locking the doors via the front door buttons would leave your HL unlocked if you didn't close the hatch and relock using the lock button on the hatch.
SmartKey is great.
I would not shy away from a Limited because it had this feature.

Soo..
The Owner's manual is gospel and it is up to the sales personel to inform owners to be sure to press the lock button on the tail gate if you open it and want all the doors locked after you close it.
Scenerio 1: go to the mall Xmas shopping. Lock the car and load up your Visa card. Come back to the HL. Open the tail gate, Close it. Go back for round 2.
Oops..all the doors are unlocked because your sales person did not inform you about the lock button on the tail gate and point to the owners manual section that states "The damn door doesn't relock after you open it and you need to pay attention and press the lock button!!!!" or something like that
