Xm

Anyone know what is needed to get the XM working? The system is "XM ready" but I think I need an antenna and some other electrical module in the dash, but I'm not sure (dealer is as well). Does Toyota have these components ? Cost? Quality?

Thanks.

The dealer should have to install an XM receiver, and if i remember correctly, it's expensive as hell (like $500 or something ridiculous). You can go after market for much less, but you won't have control through the factory head unit; you'll have to have another controller mounted on the dash or console somewhere.

I ordered the xm receiver and fit kit online for $260 and will have installed by an audio shop. Install should be in the $75 - $100 range. Should save at least $200. Receive the receiver today. Will let you know how it goes.

Where did you get this stuff? Is it Toyota's hardware? Does it need to be?

Yes it is Toyota OEM parts. Found an dealer that sold discount online. If you send me a PM, I can give you the link. I think there are other solutions, but I wanted to go with OEM parts. Personal preference.

I received the fit kit today along with the receiver. One small problem. The instructions are not included and the box says to get the instructions off of TIS. Anyone have access to TIS and can provide these instructions. I realize that I can pay by day, but wondering if anyone would be so kind as to provide the PDF to me.

I am also going to email the dealer that sold the receiver to me and see if they will provide.

Thanks for any help.

Only standard sound - No XM?

After looking a little deeper, it now seems to me that the standard sound package in the HH Base model, w/ Popular package, does not allow the Toyota XM receiver to be installed. Are you finding the same thing? I'm assuming you all probably have the limited versions, or have the JBL.. I really don't want to move my dash XM receiver from my Prius to the HH, but I might have have to live w/o Satellite radio for the time being.. Boo..

I'm pretty sure this isn't true. We have the base sound system in the Highlander with XM radio. Now, by base I mean it's the 6 disc version that comes standard in the Sport trim level (I'm not sure if there's a more "basic" version in the Base trim level).

It was already installed in the vehicle when we saw it, so I couldn't tell you what extremes they went to to add it on. They did charge a hefty price for it, however (I can't remember exactly, but I think in the neighborhood of $450).

Base base version

Yes, there is a more basic version of the radio.. Single CD.. I probably could have held out for the better system, but I don't know how much it's worth it.. Just kind of irritating that every other stereo option is satellite capable, I'm not sure why Toyota would want to limit itself to a quick $500 on every truck they sell.

Somehow I got hosed with a super base version of my 04 Prius, when I was forced to get a new car on vacation in Florida.. Didn't even have a rear windshield wiper..

Wanted to post a followup. I had the receiver and fit kit installed by a local mobile audio shop. They did and excellent job. The instructions had the antenna mounted inside the HL next to the speaker on the dash on the driver's side. I didn't like that idea and the installer recommended putting the antenna on the outside. They ended up running the antenna down the driver's side and placed on the inside of the roof rail on the driver's side with the wire running out the hatch.

The actual receiver is mounted under the driver's seat. It is visible from the rear seat. The instructions showed a cloth cover that would cover the receiver and protect the wires. The fit kit that I received did not include the cover. I should note that I did not receive install instructions with the receiver and fit kit; I paid for the day on TIS to download them. I didn't like the exposed wires and worried about someone in the back seat kicking them, so I took it back in the next day and the shop made a black plastic cover that snaps onto the receiver.

Sound of the XM is better than my Honda Accord with factory XM. The only thing that I would like was the song and artist to show in the black band that appears in the nav system when a new song would come on.

I had XM dealer installed in my Limited with NAV because it looked to be a tough job to DIY (removing the driver's seat and lots of the dash, etc). As others who have done their own have posted, the dash components are prone to get white "bend" lines in them at weak points when they pry them off to get into the dash. Mine got a line vertically at the push-button start location and on the piece that runs under the steering wheel. I was looking for this when we picked it up from the dealer thanks to this site, so I made them order me new dash parts and replace them. Luckily the color matched perfectly.

I posted in the Hybrid section that I tried the factory unit in a 1 cd head unit and it was not recognized. The parts guy was nice enought to print the installation istructions so I didn't have to pay to get them from the Techinical Services website.

I ended up buying a VAIS SL2xmt which emulates a CD changer and the sound is great. The only issues I have is that I don't get artist / title and there are no presets so it takes a long time to go from channel 5 to 70. The steering wheel controls allow me to change stations but the instructions from VAIS say that the steeting wheel controls shoul allow me to scroll through the presets. I got the SL2xmt off the internet for about the same as the factory upgrade was going to cost. Great sound but a little inconvenient.
