I concur wholeheartedly. I can't imagine why anyone would do a trade-in, unless they just had their back against the wall for one reason for another. For fun, I usually ask for the price they'll give me on a trade-in, and then compare it with what I sell it for myself later. I always laugh...giddy at the extra cash when I sell.....
The amusing part for me was that the finance guy at the dealership called me 2 days after we finished the deal on the Highlander asking if I'd sold my car yet. I guess he wanted to buy it for himself, but my price was too high. Ended up selling it 2 days later anyway.
I only think trading a car in is a good idea if your car is a white elephant or a mechanical disaster that you can convince them to take sight-unseen. Even then, a junkyard will often offer you more.
The dealerships often act like they're doing you the world's biggest favor by taking the old car off your hands. When I bought my Highlander the salesman asked once, I told him no I'd sell it myself, and for the first time in my life a car salesman answered back honestly that it's what he does too. Never asked me again. All around, these guys were the best dealership and car purchase I've ever had.

Nice OTD price. Looks like you catch a break in Missouri as opposed to California's oppressive taxes. BTW, my cousins own several of the dealerships down on Olive Blvd., but unfortunately none of them own the Toyota dealership. Small world.

Picked up my first Toyota last night! Bought a Manf. rep Demo w/ 5K miles... is an 08 HL Limited with all the bells and whistles including 4x4, Nav, DVD, Tow prep and Hitch, XM Sat. MSRP was 43,500 paid 35,500 before 2K cash back.
Was looking for a new Met. Gray with everything but rear DVD, but they're getting hard to find! Located one in NJ but dealer didn't want to give me a break since they had to go get it.
Looking forward to many happy years of driving! Thanks to this site for helping to research about the vehicle ahead of time.
In the state of Washington you get the privilege of adding 9.3% sales tax on the cost difference between your new car and your trade-in allowance.
So...if you buy a HL for $25,000 and you do not have a trade you add $2325 to the out the door cost or $27,325 plus license fee
That's BULL****! Jeez, sounds like too many Californians moved north into your state and infected the legislature. BTW, do you happen to know what Washington does if you buy a vehicle out-of-state and bring it back? I don't suppose they line you against a wall and execute for that one?

If you buy from a private party IN the state...they get you...
Quote:
Use tax
Use tax is a tax on items used in Washington when sales tax has not been paid. When you purchase a vehicle or vessel from a private party, you are required by law to pay use tax when the vehicle or vessel title is transferred. Use tax rates
Use tax is calculated at the same rate as the sales tax at the purchaser’s address. In addition to the general use tax rate, vehicles are charged an additional 0.3% motor vehicle sales/use tax.
If you buy out of state .....they get you
I haven't done this but I hear they will still get you when you go to license the vehicle for the first time. There may be a way around this if you have dual residence in another state and wait a period of time before registering it in Washington. Maybe someone in Washington that has done this can explain better.

Misery loves company...glad to know I'm not the only one having to bend over and grab my ankles for the state to tax me again. I'll see you in Nevada, perhaps?

so what when u buy outta state from where you live once you go to get your license plate they make you pay tax for them too? even though the state you purchased have already included the tax price with the car OTD price. my finance guy say their might be a extra small fee. is this true? im loss here. i hope i didnt make a big mistake and now i have to pay tax for my state
I don't know, you'll have to find out about Michigan tax law. Yep, California has taken taxation to a fine art, even to the point of proposing legislation (I'm not kidding) that if you were to leave the state and take your assets held in banks here, that you'd be liable for penalties for moving your money!!! It's THAT bad here. So far that legislation hasn't passed, but give them time. The weather is awesome here, there's more natural beauty here in a general geographic area than just about anywhere on the planet, but the people are ***holes in the extreme and the state government is one step away from a totalitarian police state...err, should I say nanny state.

In Washington they passed a law that says you have to pay sales tax on online purchases. Thank god none of the Internet stores paid any attention to it.
Another nanny law...The King county council (the county where I live) is thinking about banning washing cars in your driveway as the run off gets into the storm drains.

We just purchased a new 2008 Highlander Sport AWD (4WD) this week. Our deal was basically $27,545 (after rebate) for a vehicle with a $34,890 sticker - details are listed below. Additionally, we were given a set of wheel locks, a full tank of gas and our first oil change will be free.
Since I've gotten home I realized that the "Towing Package" does not include a receiver or a place to plug in my trailer. I'll also need to get the cross bars for the luggage rack and will get some body side moulding pieces to help prevent door dings . . . looks like I'll be spending a bit more money.
I just found this site and this is my first post, I look forward to reading your stories and tips on this car.
Thank you,
Todd
