I have decided to "bite the bullet" and buy the Toyota OEM Remote Starter for the 08 HL. The kit cost $346 delivered from Champion Toyota (Toyota World). I downloaded the installation instructions ahead of time, and am confident I can do it myself. There are very detailed directions and it is mostly just connecting a harness into the existing connectors after removing the majority of the driver and passenger panels.
I installed heated signal mirrors, a powered sub and aftermarket speakers in a Sequoia, and that was more involved. I will let you all know how it goes. The dealer wanted some insane amount to install one.

Where'd you download the instructions? Just got our new HyHi and will put in remote start for my wife for Xmas. (the one I bought her years ago for our Cruiser is still in the box...;0)

I got them from the Toyota Technical Site, which cost $10 for a day.

I went with the dealer installed OE part. The several local stereo/alarm shops didn't have much faith in overriding the factory alarm system. Not worth the risk especially with smartkey and future warranty issues.
I did NOT want two remote controls on my keychain which seemed to be mandatory by all the aftermarket kits.
I did not want any cutting/tapping into the factory wiring harness by the stereo shops. Electrical systems are too complex nowadays.
Pay a little more and not worrying is important too.
