Highlander Regional Package Rant

My dealer is telling me that there are no black leather Sport HLs in the NY tristate area, the closest place is Virginia...I will probably preference it which would take a month according to him...
this seems insane that theres no black leather here!

Im getting the silver HL and the Black is what I want so I guess I will have to wait. Rant over.

LOL, sorry don't mean to laugh but there are only about 6 different packages to choose from and each region gets what big Toyota thinks is the 'best fit' which isn't always what you want. you can special order it but that is a long process.

We just went through this. I wanted a 4x2 sport with tow package and leather. Ya right, that would be a special order. Then I went for the 4x4 sport with tow and leather. Unfortunately I needed to get dual a/c upfront and rear a/c, and a bunch of other options I didn't necessarily want.

Finally I said screw it and got a Limited. The only thing we did not want was nav and rear dvd. very happy with it!

This is my biggest gripe with Toyota. None of the packages fit what I wanted either. We ended up adding some "must have" things to our Highlander at the dealership (most likely part of the ploy because they wanted astronomical prices for them) and ended up settling on not getting a few things that I would have liked to have had and gladly would have paid for (JBL stereo and power liftgate).

Yup, almost every Limited inbound to our market has nav. To us we were just happy to get a color we liked.

Understand the frustration. I originally wanted black with black leather in a 4X4 Sport. Couldn't find one so I ended up going with what you are looking for - Silver with black leather. It's definitely a pain in trying to find what you are looking for. It always seems to be that way - if they have the color you want, it doesn't have the right options and if it has the right options, it isn't the right color....

HEY FB

I might just throw the towel in and get the light grey leather, you ever have a chance to compare the interiors? I'm betting the black looks much nicer...and its true if its not the options its the colors!

They are out, we had 3 last week and now are down to 1. And the black leather does look nice.

We went with black exterior and tan interior. My wifes choice, but I actually like it.

Hope you find what you want and don't have to settle too much.

Update:
Me & the wife now agree we like the ash better, so we are going for it, one nice thing about it is it feels like a very bright interior. I drove the HL with ash and felt the light grey would be great on a nice spring/summer day
Friday I will go and pck it up

Wanted a Sport w/leather, tried three different dealers in the Washington DC Metropolitan area, one in Northern VA, one near Andrew's AFB, and one on US Rte 301 in Southern Maryland (names withheld on purpose), ALL said that a Sport with leather had to be special ordered. The last one even told me that he wasn't aware that Toyota was installing moonroofs in Sports (funny, the Sports I had already seen all had moonroofs). Ready to throw in the towel like the previous poster, I decided to go to CarMax/Laurel Toyota in Laurel, Maryland to get a trade-in appraisal. While there, the dealer's first pick was MY DREAM... color, leather, moonroof, NAV, yada, yada, yada. Boy was it hard dealing with him with a straight face like I didn't love that package and CarMax doesn't negotiate!

I had seen both, but never considered anything other than the black leather. I came out of a black/black car and wanted to continue the same. Silver with black leather was my second choice. I just like how black leather looks in a car.

Amazing how different an experience you had than me. I shopped the same area, but found many Sports with leather and bought one. Ended up buying in Northern Va., but tried Laurel and several others. Sorry to hear you had such trouble, but I found that it was much easier surfing the Web to find what I was looking for before heading to the dealers. I have always found it is easier to do the research myself rather than ask the dealers anything. One dealer tried to tell me that the HL Sport wasn't offered in black leather!!

I have a feeling that the dealers were not taking my "shopping" seriously since I was so laid back (cant remember how to spell "non-chalant" right now). First, I was very happy with my '02 73k Town & Country which had never given me any problems. It started when we went to Alexandria Toyota to buy out of the lease on my wife's '05 Avalon. I just wanted to look at some Camry's because I've been watching hybrid technology. My wife didn't want a "2nd car" since we've always had a minivan or full size van as our 2nd vehicle. So I just started looking at the HLs since I knew that they were soon to be released in hybrid (only wanted a hybrid car, not truck). So my run down for all the dealers went something like "interested, not in a hurry, love my Chrysler, and just shopping right now but if the price is right". So from there, I guess that the dealers were more interest in moving the stock currently on their lot than trying to make a sale. Bottom line, I guess everything just kind of fell in place when I went to Laurel because that HL had just come off the truck that day (not just hype, but it wasn't even dealer prepped yet).

Seems like one has to purchase what is available. Try finding a green one. I live on Merritt Island in Florida and had to buy one from the Vero Beach dealership. Lynn (my wife) wanted the grey interior. We settled for the tan interior. No green ones anywhere else at the end of September. The heated seats are an OMG item. Remember I live in Floriduh and fingered that heated seats were just a item we really would not use. However, we have used them. The road trip to NC this Fall and the T'day trip to VA. Also, the heat is soothing for me old back... Especially the young back of my wife. Now if I only lived where heated seats could be used all the time. Not! But think about it. Heated Seats in Florida? Them thar boys at the Southeastern Dealers Group need to come right out and and say that they are educated beyond their intelligence.

I tried to get the options I wanted. Settled again for the heated seats, the rear spoiler, running boards, JBL, power rear gate, and the rear A/C. Seems like with Made in Japan, one gets what is available not what ones needs. Especially with the wholly outdated Regional stealership arrangements. Toyo Guard? One thinks that they would have covered all the paint and not left a line above the windscreen... grrr

I love the keyless entry system.
