Does anybody have a clue what it would cost to convert the US Highlander Hybrid from Miles to KM's? I want to import a US Highlander and the Candian Govt need all the vehicle have a KM dash, so it is necessary to covert the US Miles display to Km display. How much does it cost? Anyone know?

I think I would start by contacting a local Toyota dealer. If the U.S. model doesn't have daytime running lights, that would also be required. Any existing warranty may also no longer be valid. My salesman told me that Toyota has a $1000 cost build into the price of its vehicles. That is to cover warranty claims. Since the vehicle was bought in the U.S., Toyota Canada won't see that money and therefore likely will not honour any existing Toyota warranty.
I call the Toyota hotline in Canada and also email them to ask about warrenty, both the telephone and the e-mail confirm that Canada Toyota will honor the US warrenty for the US warrenty is North America warrenty and so the Canada Toyota will honor it.
The concern is that the odo is in miles (how many miles the car has run totally) and not in km. I think if we can change some software setup, the electronic display can give us the km value instead of miles. I just do not know how to do it or is it easy to do?
My bro bought a 08 Highlander from a guy who brought it into Canada right before the fiasco about the immobilizers. He didn't mention having to change the odometer. The car was plated and it was stamped ok by the RIV folks.
I bought my 08 Highlander from the United States 2 weeks ago. The only 2 things I had to make sure I had was that the car had daytime running lights and it had the engine immobillizer. They do not care about the miles to kilometers conversion. I had my car inspected and stamped for approval in Canada and got in registered without a problem 2 days ago.
Hi P5yk0t1c,
Do you have to modify the DRL by disabling the "DRL OFF" switch as someone in forum mentioned in order to pass CT's inspection?
edwardlican,
As far as I know, you do not need to modify the speedometer - it's dual display, just in a different order - US MPH-Km/h Canada Km/h-MPH. It may be inconvenient to have the odometer in Miles but no big deal. 1 mi = 1.6 km. Make a little chart and attach it to your Quick Reference guide. This little chart worths $10000 !
I agree, it is not necessary to change the vehicle from miles to kms to be able to register the vehicle in Canada. However, does anyone know if there is a sequence of buttons that can be pressed to change the vehicles digital displays from imperial to metric/Fahrenheit to Celcius? Speedometer has miles and kms on it so that isn't a big deal. However, odometer is in miles and dealerships always screw up take the miles as kms when the vehicle goes in for service, which puts a flag on the carfax report. Also, the heads-up display on the centre console displays the outside temperature in Fahrenheit instead of Celcius, it'd be nice if it could be changed relatively easily.

I have been looking for that as well. I don't think we can do it. I have searched and found nothing. If someone does find something on how to do this I would be forever greatful. Celcius sucks
i am looking to convert my 2007 4runner from miles to km, if anybody has any insight, would be much appreciated! thanks. julian. info@julianpilarski.com
Guys, look at the post "Conversion of Multifunction display" . The Fox had the Multifunction display on the centre console change to metric, so the mileage and temp are in L/100km and Celcius.
I don't know if the odometer can be changed.
With my BMW, I was able to change from Miles to KM, F to C, and MPG to L/100km via hidden computer settings. Its well documented by the BMW forums, and technical resources.
However, BMW people are more resourceful than Toyota People. Maybe that's why they own BMW.
I've just picked up Highlander Hybrid, I guess I'll have to check with the Toyota heads at the dealership if they would know. I'm willing to pay to have the ODO show km, read L/100km, and display degree C ...
Maybe I'll just change out the odometer, or if the unit is controlled by one of the control unit, then that needs to change.
I'm getting older and lazier, so I drive a Toyota now.
