Auto Door Unlock - 08 HL Sport

Does anyone here know how to turn the auto door unlock on the 08 HL off? I think I've properly followed the directions in the OM (turn key to ON, within 10 seconds place gear selector in P, then hold the UNLOCK button until the door locks cycle), but have been unsuccessful.

I don't mind the auto door locking when the gear selector leaves park, in fact I love it. It's the auto door unlocking when the gear selector is returned to park that I hate. I am no stranger to major city crime, and can't help but wonder how long before someone outside tries to jump in when the vehicle is placed in park.

Sounds like you need to have the dealer do the "Custom settings thing" page 554 in the owners manual (at least that is were it is at in mine). They have to plug in their "Intelligent Tester" to access and change the codes.

I would think you would want the following changed...

Opening Drivers door unlocks all doors (default is off ==> change to on)

Shifting gears to P unlocks all doors. (default is on ==> change to off)

Yea, I saw the bit about the dealer doing the "Custom settings", but thought that I could do it myself based on page 66 under "Automatic door locking and unlocking systems". Hmm, now I wonder what page 66 is describing. Changing the default when the selector is shifted to park is exactly what I'm after. However, I don't want to change the default for "Opening Driver's door unlocks all doors". I work in DC, and don't want ANY doors unlocked unless I physically hit the unlock button myself!!!

As always, I appreciate your help,
DeWat

I messed with this for a long time before I finally got mine to change. Here's what worked for me.

To begin, you can just leave the vehicle in Park as you normally would, with the ignition off.
-Per the instructions, turn the key to the 'On' position--do not start the engine
-Within 10 seconds press and hold the 'Unlock' button for about 5 seconds
-Release the unlock button and the door lock should cycle once by itself, confirming the change

Turn the vehicle off and then you should be all set to go.

The Unlock button toggles the Unlock when Shifting into Park function. Each time you perform the above process, it toggles the feature. In other words, if it's on, it'll turn off, or if it's off, it'll turn it on.

The Lock button toggles the Lock when Shifting out of Park function.

Please let me know if this works for you. I haven't messed with mine any further fearing that I might not get it back the way I want it! Mine's set to lock when I take off (shift out of Park) and do nothing when I shift into Park.

Good luck!

In that cause you would have

Shifting gears to P unlocks all doors. (default is on ==> change to off)
and leave
Opening Drivers door unlocks all doors (default is off ==> leave it off)

I also would like to know if Bandito's procedure works and allows you to toggle the lock/unlock separately.

Sounded like it toggled both together.

I tried it about 5 more times, and still no joy . I did everything within 10 seconds, and I also tried waiting a bit after closing the door before turning the key to the on position. It just not ought to be this hard ! ! !

Talking SEARCH is My Friend !!!

Yip, yip, yipieeeeeee

SEARCH is my friend. I did a search for "automatic door lock" in the entire forum, and post #3 at Change automatic door locks function was what I needed! The manual doesn't say anything about the chimes, but that is the key (no pun intended)! Where the manual reads:

"press and hold the driver's door lock switch ([1] or [2]) for approximately five seconds and release"

should instead read:

"as soon as you hear the chimes, press and hold the driver's door lock switch ([1] or [2]) for approximately five seconds and release. The seconds will have expired, and the switch should be released prior to the silencing of the chimes".

I can't recall if I was waiting for the chimes prior to pressing the switch, but I know for a fact that I was holding the switch well beyond the end of the chimes because I wanted to make sure the command took.

I was so happy that when I told my wife I finally got it, she told me to do her 05 Avalon. Got that on the first go round.

Dewat, thanks so much for that last post! It had me baffled for a while too. I guess I was waiting on the chimes or something. Anyway, following what you posted, it worked!! I've got mine turned off completely, which is what I wanted. I did that by doing what you said twice.....once pressing "lock" then again pressing "unlock"
