I bought an American 09 Highlander with 15,300 miles and want to get it rustproofed. My mechanic suggested Ziebart, at least for the first treatment but I have read various postings for Krown, Line X, Waxoyl, and POR 15. Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Run from Ziebart. You have to keep going back to them to have some of their product re-applied or you void the warranty. Of course, whenever you have something re-applied, they charge you.
I can't speak of the other products, but see if "the Protector" is available at one of your local dealerships. I have been using there products over the last 16 years, and have yet to see a problem when or if there is a warranty issue.

Have done Krown on this HL and wife's last accord. That accord was a 2001 and is still tight and totally rust free. Did it once a year for about 6 years and then just let it drip the rest of its life. Stuff works.
I did Krown on my last Highlander, it was a 2002 and the dealer was amazed at the condition when they inspected it last year. I got my new Highlander done this year and the application was clean and I'm expecting the same results.

Krown is the best. On flat surfaces I spray the underbody down with spray on bedliner. It lowers interior noise and then get the oil spray a week after application over top, and then the oil can get into the suspension components as well.
I have never seen people using this kind of treatment to their vehicles in Massachusetts, USA. Is it special to Canada only? Forgive me, if it offends anyone BUT just trying to learn.

No, they advertise it more in Canada and the snow belt States because there's a good market for it. If you rarely see much snow then it's not worth while to spend the $80-150 on underbody rustproofing.
A few blocks from me there's a place called Vern Houghton rust control. They do a good job. Not as good as Krown oil or how they apply it, but the Houghton guys get into the rocker panels, and other tight areas for about $70 instead of the $120 that Krown wants (in my area at least). http://www.houghtonrustcontrol.com/oil_spraying.asp
I'm sure if you looked in the phone book you might not have any shops that ONLY do oil spraying, but I'm sure a lot of smaller garages offer it as a side business to generate extra income. Even around here there are several oil spraying businesses, but there are also small and larger garages that offer the service as well, although they're not always as thorough as a straight oil spraying business can be. In the end you get what you pay for, and as I had mentioned Houghtons is one of the best deals in the Kitchener area. Krown is still #1, but for nearly half the price and a spray job nearly as good, I couldn't say no.
Just a word of caution. Previous post mentions "oil", and perhaps it was meant in the general sense...not sure. In any case, ensure that it is not an oil as some form of motor oil etc.....it makes a big mess, stains driveways, and will likely damage rubber components....these can usually be had for $39-59, but you get what you pay for. Krown will be a bit messy for a while, but it will not stain or erode driveways...it washes away. Some claim that it causes rubber to expand a bit, but I have never had any issues. It says its environmentally safe, which if true, is a bonus.
Cheers

I can't see any type of oil being environmentally safe, without it costing $500 a gallon. There are several types of undercoating available, and it also depends on government regs: Ontario: http://www.monarchoil.com/Rust%20Preventatives.html

Firm believer in Krown for sure. Sold 90 Volvo wagon last summer...525k kms and very little rust. Yes depending on the rubber compounds...some will stretch and was a bit of an issue with Volvo. To avoid stretching rubber, I was advised to silicon spray/coat all rubbers prior to Krown application..seemed to help.
Also don't allow Krown to remain on rubber surfaces. Keep wiped and washed down until the "running sops" following application. '03 GMC has been Korwned since new as were previous trucks. Yes it will drip and be messy...but better than the rust alternative in my books. Krown also helps lube internal door latch mechanisms and keeps them free running.
I was able to get free annual applications for 6 years. Then they started trying to charge me $45 for a cleaning with each free annual application. The first year I balked and they waived the fee. The next year I washed the underside myself before I took it in and they accepted that. The next year they said I had to pay the cleaning fee even though I had washed it myself. I got insurance to cover it the next year due to some body repair work from an accident. I never took it in for year 10 and ended up trading it in for a 2009 Highlander.
The warranty only runs for 10 years anyway. I never had any rust problems. But 10 years of $45 car washes and the initial application fee are too much for 10 years of coverage.
I wish I could find a Krown shop near me. I would have definitely gotten it on my Highlander. I've heard great things about Krown.
