hole in interior hatch panel

I really like my new Highlander but was very disappointed when, after three weeks, the interior panel on the rear hatch broke as the hatch was closed -- not slammed --hitting a plastic fishing tackle box. The panel itself flexes very easily and seems flimsy. Toyota says that it's not under warranty because it is a break and not faulty workmanship or defective materials. Replacement cost, labour, and taxes amount to about $500 Cdn. When the weather warms, I'll just try to do a repair myself with some glue. Anyone have any experience with similar problems? I've never had a similar issue with other makes of vehicles. Thanks!

I do a lot of camping and have closed my rear hatch onto things very hard many times with no ill effects. Two questions for you. Which trim line do you have? Can you take pictures and post them of the panel and the damage?

UHHH they are feeding you a crock of shit..I think. If you have the power back door, it will automatically back up when it encounters an object in it's way of closing to prevent any damage...that is if you have the power back door and you closed it with the button on the hatch that closes it automaticaly. What trim level do you have? Regardless..it should NOT crack under any circumstances. I think it is defective and a weak point in the panel.

I think the implied message from saying "closed not slammed" was that he doesn't have the power rear door. I agree that it shouldn't crack under NORMAL circumstances, but if it were forced closed when it shouldn't have been, I don't see any reason why it wouldn't. Haste makes waste.

I don't think that should happen. I've closed my door manually (I don't have power liftgate) on many hard things and the only damage that occurred was a dent around the latch (metal). The damage has already occurred and there is no way to fix that. I wouldn't pay $500 for that piece, EVER. I would wait and fix it myself when the weather gets warmer, and if you plan on keeping your Highlander for a while you may be able to get a new piece from a junkyard.

Hi all,
I kindda research from the forum but did not see any thread about this.... does anyone know how can I open the hatch (rear glass) when the car in on with the ignition key attached to the car?? is there a button hidden somewhere?? I don't know where I can deploy it to open, unless I turn off the car and take the remote and open it from there. Many Thanks,

There's a black button to the left of the rear wiper. If the car is unlocked, you can press that button to pop the glass without using the key fob.

My bad, I had a brain fart... I was just walking past the back of my highlander and realized the button is actually to the right of the 'R' in Highlander on the back, just a little black, rubber button.

I'm curious as well. I wished original thread starters would keep up with their threads...

you can open the glass with the remote? my remote will only open the hatch and not the glass, is there some special way to trigger it with remote? btw, keyless fob here.

On a side note, I can't seem to close the hatch while engine is running with the remote. I step out of the vehicle, and want to close it while engine still runnning, but doesn't seem to register....anyone else have this problem?

You can't have the glass OPEN with the remote, but I have a button that unlocks the glass so that I can pull it up... pretty much useless for me since I always just open the whole rear hatch.

I ran outside to check my hatch; I can't close my hatch either with the key fob while the vehicle is running. I believe this is some sort of a safety feature or override, as none of my buttons on my key fob work while the vehicle is running. I figured out the lock and unlock buttons are disabled when I tried in vain to lock my car and keep it running to warm up and use my other key fob to regain access.
