Highlander's range: How close have you come and where were you?

I was on the freeway in the 'slow lane' which was 75MPH, with 4 miles left (according to the MFD). I reached the gas station with 3 miles to go. Boy, walking would have sucked (see the blissful Michigan temperature is a nice toasty 30F)... Or even having to do EV mode up the exit ramp (scary).

How close have you come to running out of gas and where where you?

I do not have a hybrid, but I got down to 22 and this was the first take with the new car and we went and filed up, my heart was pounding at 22, I could only imagine what it would be at 3.

Coasting to the pump

As embarrassing as it is, I have twice rolled to the fuel pump in my old Chevy Van...never again.

I was driving from Texas to Georgia pulling a 2200 pound U-haul trailer and found myself in the middle of nowhere AL on US 80 between I-85 and Columbus, GA and drove an extra 4 miles on 0. I made it to a tiny little gas station and figured there wasn't another anywhere close. After filling up, I started on US 80 again and not even a half mile later I was in a decent sized town with dozens of gas stations everywhere... Go figure.

One winter I was on my way to the gas station to gas up and was three blocks away when it ran out of gas. Then the girl, yes, it was a girl, that brought me gas from the station gave me a lecture how I should NEVER let my tank get below half in winter. I felt like saying, "yes, mother."

I have driven with the car at 0 KM cruising range and nothing happened. I have also been pulling into the service station with the car just hitting 0 KM, it took 65.5L to fill it.

When I was driving my Honda Accord, I ran out of gas about 800ft from the gas station. Unfortunately the gas station was at the top of the hill, I was on a steep incline, it was winter, cold, blowing snow and I was on a pretty fast moving road.

So, I thought...not a bad place to run out of gas. I walked to the gas station and looked for a gas can to buy. THEY DID ***NOT*** HAVE ONE!!!

And the next gas station was about a mile away...

So I had to call a co-worker and ask him to come get me and take me to the gas station to buy a gas can. Because I had no gas, I had no heat. I nearly froze waiting in the car for my co-worker. If I had been thinking I would have told him to pick me up from the gas station but that would sound a little strange (pick me up from the gas station and take me to another gas station).

So my co-worker finally showed up and took me to the other gas station. This gas station had gas cans...but their pumps were not working. Are you serious???

So I drove back to the other station, filled the gas can and finally filled my car.

Now I own about 5 gas cans...

When I filled up my 08 HH with 2 miles left on the MFD I still had 2 gallons in the tank. The displays are quite conservative.

I've driven my car approximately 20-30km beyond zero on the MFD. The manual for the Aussie Klugers mentions that there is a range of 50km after the empty light comes on.

I quite often drive below zero, in fact normally I start to think about getting gas then. The most gas I ever put in was 17.738 gallons. The highlander has a 19.2 gallon tank.

There is at least a gallon of fuel left after it says 0 - when it says 0, find a gas station, but you have another 10 or 15 left at least!

Pulled in with 2 miles left. Added 17.6 gallons, tank is 19.2, so roughly 1.6 gallons left before filling.

Checked out your picLink.
...Couldn't part with the Hybrid badge, hugh???
Nice Ride. Looks great in Black!

Many years ago I drove a 1980 Mitsubishi rebadged Dodge Challenger and came up about 100 feet short of the pumps. I had to put it in 1st gear and bump it over with the starter. Easier than pushing. That wouldn't work with today's "safety" interlocks on the clutch pedal.

I just removed the word 'Toyota' from the rear hatch. I like it a lot...I don't get huge fuel savings but it is fun and quiet(er). I only wish I had a stock radio that my iPod would work with.
