Crossbar and ski rack

i have a 09 HL limited and want to install crossbar and ski rack.

does the dealer have the same color crossbar as the limited (silver) or does it all comes in black?

and what is the difference between thule and yakima ski racks?

would it be better if i stick with factory crossbar with either yakima or thule ski rack? since i dont like the crossbar sticking out too much.

thanks

The xbars on the HLLs at my dealer are black. You, or a body shop could paint them if you wanted silver. The black complements most colours, though.

Yakima and Thule are like a religious debate. I was raised a Yakimite, and I think their stuff is pretty good. My old bars got a lot of abuse and held up great, their factory bar clamps are a clean design, too. In either case, make sure the rack comes with locks (yaks do), AND the racks can't be unscrewed from the rails. You can get a lock nut for most Yak clamps if needed and I expect Thule has some anti-theft measure too.

If you are going to hold skis upside down, make sure the bindings clear the roof. Measure the height of the factory rails and add that to the clearance on whatever ski rack you choose. If you need more height, go with a Thule or Yakima cross bar.

The Yakima bars can be cut to any length by the way, so if you want a shorter bar to stay in the roof profile, measure about 3/4 of an inch or more past where they exit the rail clamp, saw them off and pop the end caps on.

I have a 09 HL Sport. I own both the Thule and the Yakima Fatcat 6 ski racks. I will tell you that the Yakima Fatcat 6 are the easiest to install on the crossbars, and are much quieter than the Thule. My Thule's whistled and was very annoying for a 5 hour trip to Mammoth.
