We just sold our Mercedes ML and my wife asked me to find a reliable mid size SUV that's good on gas! Since that doesn't exist I found the next best thing for the money.......2010 Highlander base. She doesn't care about extra options, AWD or horsepower so it's perfect.
One problem.......I ordered it on October 1st.....toyota did not have an exact delivery date yet or an actual price to quote me.......the price has gone up twice since and in early January I was told that I will not get it until Late February early March.
Now with the plant shutdowns and part replacements who knows when I will get it now?
Am i crazy to think it's not worth it???? Is this normal 5-6 months waiting for a car(even before the recall) It's not a hand made Buggati for Pete sake.
also the 2011 will roll out probably in august september so what should I do?
To top the dealer gave me a piece of crap Equinox on a short term lease, which I said ok originally only because it was only for 6-8 weeks (my approximate original delivery date was Mid November) and now I'm stuck with it for 6months + or until the Highlander gets delivered.
What am I to do...the wive is getting pissed with all the wait.
I'm in Ontario Canada and it seems that every Toyota dealer has every Highlander except for the Base model. This sucks......

Why sell the ML? At least one long term poster on this board sold his 2008 HL to move up to a ML, and he is very happy.
The HL is a decent enough vehicle, but quite frankly it is not worth waiting 5 to 6 months for in my opinion. In Canada anyways the price of the HL is too high for the quality delivered - most of the posters on this site are from the US and they are paying 30 to 40% less than we are. I personally would look elsewhere, but to each his own.

the ML was originally mine but we switched vehicles early on cause I commute. We sold the ML after 6 years because my wife hated the premium fuel and the horrible fuel consumption but the SUV was amazing. also with age Mercedes tend to be very high maintenance $$$$$ .
The problem with canceling the Highlander is that what else am I going to get for her? Given her demands there is nothing out there for that price, size, fuel economy. and I won't go American or Korean so......

Don't know if the situation in Canada is different than below the border, but I would think your dealer could locate a base within the region without too much work--seems odd, and getting one from the factory shouldn't take more than 4 or six weeks?
Too late, but if you are not taking immediate delivery of a vehicle, always put exit clauses in any agreement: you get a deposit back if you don't take delivery in x days--for any reason; maximum price will be X--based on whatever formula you want; you can cancel the lease any time after X days-the assumed delivery date...
On the practical side: Is there proof they actually ordered the vehicle when they said they did? If not, I think you could get out of your lease pretty easily as they are acting in bad faith. Would you consider a comparable deal on a low mileage 2009 and they extend the wty a year? Call around to dealers yourself within say 200 clicks. If you find one, have the dealer acquire it (and charge them a finders fee ). If you find one, they aren't doing their job. Find a loop hole in the lease, or just tell the dealer that this is taking far too long, even excluding the recall, and you need to find a vehicle elsewhere--see if they will cut the lease. Who knows, they might be reasonable. Then get a 2010 subaru--bigger then the 2009, although the engineering department was out the day the design department added the roof rack

to Toyota Nation!
I don't know about consumer laws, etc., in Canada, but I had a loosely similar experience here in the U.S. I wanted the Base model in 4WD which is not available (at least at that time) in California, so I had to special order my HL from Japan. Delivery took a full five months, and anticipating that the price of the vehicle might go up I locked in the purchase price with Toyota through the dealership that handled the actual transfer and sale. In the end I got what I wanted, and I've never regretting waiting for my HL and I'd do the same thing all over again if I had to. If the vehicle fills your needs, then buy it.

Does she mind something a little smaller? If not then I'd get a loaded RAV4 V6 or a hondad pilot

thanks guys for your understanding.
Camread, funny you mention the Pilot, after work I went to see the Pilot (in case my delivery date of 6 months later, gets even more extended because of recalls) and without haggling the dealer had already taken off $3500 off MRSP and another 2500 for rebate bringing it to
$32. 475, that's $700 less than Highlander MRSP.
I can't even get Toyota to give me the Base model with the $1400 upgrade for the base price(and they have one on the lot) or take any money off/offer anything after waiting 6 months for a delivery that was originally supposed to be 6-8 the most?
My first experience with Toyota might be my last.
If only the Pilot wasn't so ugly........
I'm calling the dealer and if they can't even keep the 1st week of March delivery they promised(that's six months after ordering) because of recalls, then I'm walking away and never dealing with Toyota again.
See if they can locate a 2009 or 2010 that was Japanese built and not part of the recall. For all the trouble/time they should give you a killer deal. Any chance of you coming to the states and buying it to save some money?

at this point they can't seem to find nothing unfortunately......and won't give me a deal on the Base+upgrade model on their lot.
As for the US......Most dealers in Canada (not only Toyota) are not too kind when you bring them US bought cars under warranty.....actually they refuse service most of the time.
Great ideas tough, but not available for us Canadians.
Funny guy......too station wagon like for my taste, plus it's for my wife and she hates the Venza.
I'm starting to second guess Toyota.
Nissan dealers give me $4500 off the Pathfinder and Honda $5500 off the Pilot without haggling and Toyota is taking 6 months to deliver an SUV that originally was suppose to take 6-8 weeks and won't even give me any concessions???? And with the recall it might even take longer?????
Given their current problems they should be trying to keep their customers happy, or else their customer base is going down like their shares have.
I miss Mercedes customer service.......even Honda's as well.
Have any of you guys experienced anything like this???
